A friend of mine has the Meprolight Tru Dot, he really likes it, once you sight it in you can rotate the dot so it is in the correct position, others I have seen you have no second adjustment for the dot. I have shot his ar with it a few times, its really bright, fo low and bright light situations it works well, I was thinking of picking one up http://www.midwayusa.com/product/227...-tritium-green

I use Troy non folding rear sight with standard gbfs on my dpms tac16. 2 inch groups usual.

I have the Truglo one and really like it. I like that it's a dot alone and no post. To me that just works out better. With a dot in post design you either have an obstructed view of your target using the dot or POI/POA problems at night if using the dot. With the Truglo version it's much simpler: put dot on target and pull trigger. Downside is the install is a massive PITA, and that's probably an understatement. Good news is you only have to due it once. Durability was an initial concern with the exposed tube but after two years of patrol use it's held up fine. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

I think when funds allow I'm going with a Troy rear sight.

when i get an ar15, im getting an optic, ill make sure i always have irons on it, and make sure i train with them, so if i need to use them im proficient. But red dots blow iron sights out of the water

yeah, but still same can be said with irons, i shoot better with a red dot than irons all around, long range needs a scope....or a red dot magnifier

Irons suck, but they always work so some backups are always wanted

...until they die! ....Then you need the irons. No batteries in iron sights.

I have yet to have the batteries die in any of my Aimpoints, and I leave them on, 24/7/365. They get changed once a year.

You should absolutely know how to use iron sights, and if the gun is capable, should have a set of BUIS on it, but the red dots absolutely do blow the irons out of the water for most realistic shooting.

im starting on irons only when i get it to get proficient, and while i save money for a red dot. Once i get a red dot, im keeping backup sights on there. If a dot fails you can flip up an iron or have a fied one cowitnessed. Theres always the irons dont break there always ready crowd, they always pretend not to notice you can have both.

I put my Troy rear sights on and shot this weekend.The "long distance" aperture is a "bullhorn" (?). Do you sight in center or where the horns come together? I didn't have time to get to those.....................DOC

Center the tip of the front post in the middle of the rear aperture. Only focus on the front site, your eye should work to naturally center that site post in the aperture

I agree with this. On my duty rifle I do have and use the BUIS but the primary site is an EOTECH.

On my plinking gun (the one I'm teaching my son rifle with) it is the included Magpul sights only.

Optics can offer many different advantages, depending on the one used. More leeway in eye position/cheek weld (or lack thereof), faster (no lining two thing up), usable even in very low light (red dot/holographic/illuminated reticle), magnification, light gathering, etc.

A good optic that matches your use for the gun is usually a good investment
