From some of the threads I have read I am under the impression that older guns are actually preferred. Am I wrong? I know that I personally won't buy a Gen4 yet. I could swear I read a thread recently where a guy was having a problem with a late model Gen 3 gun. One of the posters made a comment asking the original poster why he would buy a gun newer than [ ? ] year model. I don't remember the year.

I picked up a NIB Gen 3 today with a FYM prefix. The database indicates "FYM - G-22 - Unknown - - Dept. issue". This one doesn't give the year, but the one before it on the list is "FYL - G-22 - January 2004", and the one after it is "FYX - G-19 - October 2003" I'm guessing this gun was made nine or ten years ago.

Would "Dept. isssue" mean the gun was a special run for a particular LEO department, or that it was just probably ordered by a department?

If you could pick a year model, or a range of year models, what would you prefer? None of my guns are newer than I think five or six years back. I have one that is I think about a 2000 model.

I probably could have worded my post better. An example is that I have bought a couple of older Remington 1100's that were made in the 80's. I wouldn't trade either of them for a brand new in the box new production 1187. I know from personal experience that new Remington's aren't as good as the older ones.

Now I'm wondering if Glock has sort of headed in that direction. I know anything could have been made at 8:00 on Monday morning or 4:30 on Friday. It is just a luck of the draw. I am wondering what year model range one should look for in a Glock.

My preference for Glocks, is anything made before 1/2009- about the timeframe of MMZ prefixes and earlier.

I would stick to a GEN3 Glock and it would be, in 357 SIG. That tells me that it has the strengthened frame, for the 357 SIG cartridge. It would have all the design changes that have occurred, since the GEN 1. People that know Glock, can tell you the S/N where the 357 SIG rated frame came out and any G22, after then would, also, be just fine.
