I work at an indoor sports arena. my boss is a boarder line gun guy. he likes guns and owns a .22. he even bought me a membership to a gun club.

our maintenance guy keeps his in the truck and claims if it were his business he would fire anyone who carried in his business. my boss has asked me not to carry.

he claims that he talked with his lawyer and that because we occasionally have school teams in our private facility that our building could be considered school grounds.my boss worries more about his business if I had to defend my self then he does about my safety.

Now, I'm here late at night (1 am) and am the only employee on in a 150,000 sq foot building in a not so good part of town. we have been broke in to and I routinely deal with homeless people. my boss keeps a baseball bat with him when he is here late nights.

I HATE NOT Carrying but I really can't afford to lose my job. this is the only place I go i do not feel safe. (cause i can't carry)

does anyone believe that a private establishment could be considered a school?

That's law here in Texas. If a school event is being held at a site off school premises, the event premises do indeed become (school grounds). I feel for you! I am torn,Ike my job, don't need it though (wife is an executive @ Fortune 500 co.) but still don't want to lose job. instructor at ccl class said "do not lose your job over company ccl policy. Still torn though.....

Arizona is a right to work state so I could be fired for anything. Company has a policy against firearms on property or anywhere they are conducting business. Even if they didn't have that policy it would be difficult for my since my job takes me into hospitals, courts, police departments, schools, post office and other prohibited areas on a regular basis.

I would if I could. Just I like having a job in this economy and in my little town the only shootings have been suicide, cop self-defense, and angry tweaker road rage.

Feel reasonably safe without and better that wherever I am my car is with me and I do carry in the car at work. The parking lot issue isn't mentioned in the personnel handbook.

I carry just about every day, even though there's a small paragraph prohibiting it in the handbook. One of the owners (small company) carries, so I figure, why not?

However, I do lots of work off site, and often in schools. When I'm there, I lock it in the truck (hate leaving a firearm out of my personal control that's not locked up at home) And I often have to travel to states where the CC laws are not as friendly as Idaho's. It sometimes means I'm not carrying (not even in the vehicle) in places where I think I might actually need to. (like Oakland, for example. I was working there a few years ago, and had to get buzzed into Taco Bell, at 2 in the afternoon Probably a sign that I wasn't in the best neighborhood)

I do ignore the gun free zones when I'm in my home state and not working though. (movie theaters, malls, etc, but never government buildings) I don't frequent these establishments, but if I happen to be at one of these places when some psycho starts shooting the place up, I'll fight the charges of carrying where I'm not allowed, if it means I was able to defend my family or others.

We are allowed to keep weapons in our vehicles, as long as they are locked up and out of sight. But company policy states we cannot bring weapons into the building. I like my job to much to violate that policy on purpose.

Yup, I'm also the boss. I allow clients to carry as well.... at least those that I know about. I assure them I'm cool with it. Of course if I had actual concerns (hint in my user name) I'd take a different approach, but it has yet to be an issue.

If your user name means what I think it does, I've been in the same field for 20 years. Have seen too many like us beaten to near death - and killed by unexpectedly violent clients. Seems like carrying should be as common for us as for jewelry store staff...and as understood.

I work in a locked mental health unit, its a federal offense to enter with a firearm even if you are LEO. Even if it was allowed I wouldnt carry there, our patients are unpredictable and I wouldnt chance one of them getting a firearm. A taser on the other hand would be helpful sometimes.

Thanks for chiming in, I assumed I was alone here. I know this is always a risk, but I've been fortunate enough not to have experienced this personally, as I work with higher functioning people. I don't worry about "crazy" people; I worry about the pi$$ed-off parent who lost custody and wants to take it out on someone. Leaving an office park alone at night isn't the safest thing either.

I didn't know that, but am surprized it's actually federal, rather than state. It makes sense for locked facilities. I'm in a private practice setting and don't envy you. But then again, with changes in health care, I may be out of business by the end of the year, and you'll still have a job.

1. Class A Misdemeanor Criminal trespass by concealed handgun license holder
2. revocation of CHL

I am in TX also, anbd have considered it, but decide to remain the 'law abiding citizen' and keep a spec ops 101 limited folding rescue pocket knife with me at all times.

I cannot per the rules of the company handbook. And I prefer to not bypass that rule. But I do keep a Glock in my truck in the parking lot. And my employer could legally disallow me keeping my gun my my truck while on their property, but they haven't yet had the need to add that to the handbook. And if that did change, I'm not so sure it would affect my current carry routine. *winkwink*

I recently read my employee handbook, I'm a mechanic in Illinois, right by where they talk about no alcohol on the premise, they state no firearms, but when Xmas comes around the boss is the first one to bring a bottle and start doing shots on the parts counter, he doesn't follow one rule, I won't follow the other when concealed carry comes

Two of the three of us do anyway.

CEO and the one 'urban' employee don't.

Of course if I get caught, I'm past SS retirement age.

My wife also carries in a hidden purse pocket. Totally against hospital rules, but she figures if the surgeons can show her their guns while in her office, she can also be safe on the three block walk through a bad part of town to the parking lot.

She says she'd rather be alive and looking for work, than buried.

I guess it comes down to how strongly you feel you need to carry vs how much you like your job, and how much you need it. Work rules don't permit carry at work, so I don't. That doesn't mean I'm not prepared and that I don't have a plan in the event there is an unfortunate event.

I was laughing the other day. I watched a bunch of troops escorting a load of armament from one armoury to another. They had M-4s with no magazines in em. When I asked one of them about it, they said the M-4s were just to deter people, they didnt have any ammo....what a sad world!

It absolutely amazes me that military bases are gun free zones. We have gone completely insane as a country. Fort Hood could have been diminished with casualties if only the soldiers were allowed to carry. Thanks for you service...

I work remotely from home so I am a bit lucky. If I go into the office (which is in an Office Park) and the parking lot is free and open access, there is a gun in the vehicle I drive. I park near the door and have not had any issues as the company name is not on the door or building. Yes there are stealth companies out there that do work that you would never know what it is. The company is well known world wide, but certain offices are 100% stealth. You just don't know who it is going in and out, but their access card works the front door.
