I bought my very first gun, a G3 Glock 22. It's for home defense (not CCW as I'm in Los Angeles County where you can't get a permit unless there's fatwa declared against you by al-Quaeda). I picked it because I fired a couple hundred rounds from a friend's and really loved it. It feels perfect in my hand, I got reasonably accurate quickly with it, and I'm getting even better. However, there's one problem. While my hands are of average size and I can comfortably get my distal joint on the trigger, I find that I can't trip the magazine release with my thumb without shifting the grip from my shooting position.

Is this a big deal in a crisis or did I get a gun too big for my hand?

A lot of folks have trouble reaching the standard release button on the Glock, the 1911, and many other pistols. An enlarged release button is available but not necessarily the most practical choice.

Sounds like you're right-handed, so...

Some turn the hand on the gun, (keeping the muzzle downrange), bringing the proximal joint of the trigger finger under the grip tang. This pulls the thumb toward the release button, with much more range of movement.

Alternatively, you can use your support hand thumb to press the magazine release button.
