So I've had the itch to buy a G30 for some time now, I own a very early (WH prefix) G21 and really love it even though a have normal sized hands. I'm left-handed so it's easy for me to run the large frame Glocks. I've been looking for a used G30 (non-SF) for a little while and they are either selling for $500 (about $75 too much IMHO) or they are beat to hell for about $450. My local high volume LEO supply dealer across town has new G30 and G30SF models in stock for $550 (non-LEO here). I know that's the average new price of the large frame non-Gen 4 models pre-SandyHook. My around the corner tiny gunshop who usually sells stuff near list price just got in a GEN 4 G30 yesterday morning for $648.
Is the GEN 4 really worth $100 more in the compact models such as the G30? The normal G30 already has the dual spring recoil assembly. I like the new texture, but I DON"T like the new finish Glock is applying to their guns. I suppose a new GEN 3 G30 would have the same finish as a GEN 4 if they were manufactured recently, so I suppose it's a wash in this department.

I suppose my real options are pay $500 for an older G30 with the flat finish I prefer or go with the GEN 4?

Opinions? If you have a GEN 4 G30 and upgraded from an older G30, I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Gen 4's come with an extra magazine (3 total) so that is one reason they cost a little more. Being that mag sales are crazy right now if you want extra mags for anything you may have a tough time running them down. I know it's not $100 dollars worth, but you have to take into account the demand for this stuff nowadays. I like the Gen 4's and if I was seriously looking at a G30 right now I'd probably get it.

I would not want the New texture against my Skin, so a Gen 3 is fine for me.
10 rd mags are not hard to find.
Money saved you can get a mag and some nice night sights!

in my opinion id spend the 550 on a new gen 3 and use the saved $ to throw some decal grips and some night sights on it. IMO id rather have decal grips than the new frame texture.

Just picked up a G30 Gen 3 and love it. I prefer the larger frame.

from what i've seen the gen 4 premium is usually around $50. as noted, get an extra mag but i really prefer the 'stippling' on the gen 4 grips vs the smoother gen 3 grips.

I can't attempt to sell you on something I don't believe.

In a straight up comparison...it isn't worth an extra Benjamin for the difference.

Hell...I'd personally take the Gen3 even if the prices were the same.

Maybe that's just me...

I have a gen3 30sf and 29sf... they are just fine. A gen4 is not worht an extra $100,

I believe. I have 3 Gen4's. This is the best thing I can tell you. Don't buy the Gen4, it will be sold by the end of the week. You know you want the Gen4 but you just can't spend the extra bucks. What happens if you want to put Night Sights on, forget it? Do yourself a favor never get into 1911's. The last thing I will say about the Gen4's is out of the three I have, I have never had a single issue, not one. And I'm a 1911 guy.

Nowadays EVERYTHING is hard to find, both 10 round magazines, and 10 rounds!

Thanks for your insights guys. I stopped by the shop with the GEN 4 this morning and fondled it next to a GEN 3 SF. It really didn't seem all that much of an improvement over the GEN 3 to me. Not like how the GEN 4 G17 seems to be quite different in feel and use over a GEN 3 G17. I'm gonna sit on my hands and wait for a non-SF G30 to come around, hopefully an early one with the flat finish. With the introduction of the new G30s, I'm betting some older G30 pistols should be hitting the used market soon.

Cool, nothing wrong with waiting for what you want. If you just cant justify the extra expense dont spend the money.
