Why Did McCain Rescue Hagel?

Why did he go on Meet the Press this morning to say that Chuck Hagel was going to get confirmed as Secretary of Defense?
McCain argued that Hagel had the votes to be confirmed and that he didn’t want the process to be delayed further.
But if that is the case then why did Bob Woodward go on Fox News yesterday to say that Democratic Senators were calling the White House to ask when Hagel was withdrawing?

The news media has had McCain on a short leash for the last 10 years. They don't let him get too far away before they ask him to see things their way.

You are right, and I apologise. I don't know why I am cursing today. Usually the swear filter gets it. Maybe I can edit it out. I will make the attempt.

McCain and Hagel have had their little squabbles but at the end of the day they belong to the same club. McCain just used the Hagel confirmation dust-up as a chance to get more publicity. There was never chance the Senate would actually block an ex-Senator from a cabinet post (unless his name was John Tower).
