You can handload a 10mm down with light loads to get .45acp performance, but you cannot load a .45 up to 10mm performance.
You can also leave out the last two rounds of ammo in a 10mm Glock 20 magazine and have the same capacity (13) as a .45 Glock 21 mag, but you cannot load 2 more rounds into the .45 mag to bring its capacity up to that of the 10mm (15) without a mag extension.
You can hit "minute of pieplate" at 100 yards with only 5" of holdover with a 10mm, but you can't do that with a .45 (You'd need almost 20 inches of holdover to do that with the 45).
You'll also be delivering more energy at 100 yards with the 10 than a .45 does at the muzzle.
I could go on.

I wonder why such a weak load of the 10mm was ever introduced - for a weaker autoloader?

I had both until my son's future wife found out The G21 was his so I took it to Texas. Future wife wanted it for house protection, she carries a 380. So now I am in the market for a 45 acp for me. I also have the G20 and S&W 629 44 Mag.
+1 on get both. My son would also like my FAL in Texas

Think it's more about - the weaker shooter. At least that's what I've been lead to believe. If the FBI, had stayed with it, or, one of the special forces adopted the 10, I believe it would be a much more popular caliber. For the life of me, don't/can't understand why it's not the choice of many. It is mine!

If you want to shoot 10mm a lot, you need to handload. I handload both for 10mm and 45 acp but for 45 acp Walmart is a cheap source of 45 acp or used to be. 45 acp is much easier to get than 10mm in loaded form.

It is always wise to reload, no matter the caliber, but one doesn't have too, or need to rely on walmart for 10MM ammo.

Does any ammo maker offer full-power 10mm Auto ammo? Corbon maybe.

They are currently out of stock, but you need to look no further, and, that is a good price. Put them in your favorites cache, and check when they return to in stock. Take a look at their lineup, and the velocity is marked for each offering. Yes, it's real "10" ammo!

None of the major manufacturers.
One reason why I sold mine and went .45 ACP.
Availability doesn't even begin to compare

I guess that one has to be a reloader to fully load the 10mm cartridge.

I just can't believe we're on page 3 of this thread, and nobody has claimed that the 10mm is a .44 mag equivalent.

.45 auto is going to be outmatched by a full power 10mm, but the .45 is operating at around half the pressure. Even out the pressures (a la .45 Super) and it's a different story altogether.
I can tell you I can get 5 .45 auto slugs on a hunk of steel in the time it takes me to get 3 10mm's on target.
To me, the 10mm is the great in-betweener in pistol cartridge history. A potent round for a bottom feeder, but at the cost of blast and recoil compared to most service cartridges... but compared to most revolver cartridges, it lacks the horsepower to keep up. Again, has a place somewhere between the two. The real comparison in my mind is against .357 magnum.

That's true. The 10mm does have a lot of blast and recoil with full-power loads.

Actually it's between a 357 and a 41 Magnum.

Maybe that is why the ammo makers make reduced-power 10mm loadings.

The knowledgeable 10mm advocates NEVER invoke a 44mag comparison. 41mag is the usual mantra.

Yes.
Can't touch a full house .44 mag.
A full house .357 mag is much closer.

Well, you don't need to be knowledgeable to hang out in Caliber Corner. Pull up a chair and hang out a bit. It will happen.

I guess I am patient. I await a claim that 10mm is competitive with 120mmAPDS!

Well, the 10 mm is much easier to carry on your belt. Likely much faster to deploy. Much easier to carry 30 round of ammo on your person. 120mm vs 10mm....I'd like to shoot then both.
Can ya throw in M2 also. I'd like to shoot one of those too.

i have both a G29 and a G20 along with over 500 rounds of factory 10mm id gladly trade locally for a G30 and G21 and the same ammo, holsters are the same for these guns so new gear is not needed.
i dont hunt with a handgun per se, and .45acp is plenty for what i might encounter in the woods in my area.
the 10mms give me more power than my 45s but i just dont need it. the consolidation of calibers is really the only benefit id get from this. my 10mms were wants guns, not needs guns.
