Gen2 G22 LE Trade In Review

General Glocking

General Glocking

Many Glock owners consider Gen 2 Glocks to be the best models they've made and nowadays these Gen2 guns have been flooding the surplus market as departments upgrade their guns to the newer Gen4 models; particularly the G22s. The good news for the public is that while most of these guns were carried a lot and show some wear, many were shot very little over their lifetime and have plenty of life left in them.

Pros:

-Reliable. The gun has had 0 malfunctions
-Accurate (more accurate than I am)
-Durable. The Gen 2 guns are where Glock built their reputation for durability.
-Easy to maintain
-TONS of aftermarket support
-Accepts 15, and 22 round factory magazines
-Glock has great CS
-Durable finish
-Cheap replacement parts, should you ever need them
-Low Bore Axis resulting in a relatively soft shooting gun
-Requires very little cleaning/lubrication to run reliably
-Many people prefer the Gen2 grip without the finger grooves present on the Gen3/4 guns

Cons:

-I'm not a fan of the Glock factory plastic sights
-When I first inspected the gun, I noticed the slide stop lever had almost no spring tension and replaced it. What I'm getting at there is that you'll certainly want to inspect the guns because some departments out there do very little armoror work (if any at all) on their guns.
-Gen 2 40S&W Glocks are famous for being vulnerable to "ka-booms" due to a partially unsupported chamber. I personally believe the majority of this these incidents occur due to reloaded ammo but nonetheless it's worth noting.

Here's a video with some shooting from the 12m line, break down the gun, compare the chamber support to a Gen4 Glock, and discuss the pros and cons of the gun:

Nice review (also liked your gen2 G19 review). I love the older 2nd generation frames, and really like my gen2 G22 police tradein. Got it for a good deal with mild slide wear. A thorough cleaning, + storm lake barrel, + lonewolf 9mm threaded conversion barrel and I have a very versatile, reliable gun.

There seem to be a lot of these older gen2 G22's hitting the market these days as departments that were early adopters of the .40 and Glock platform upgrade. They can be a great value with many years of service left in them.

My 30s has trouble feeding +p 230 gr ammo. It is flawless with standard loads. When I get down to the last few rounds in the mag is when it hangs up. I tried a 21lb recoil spring and it helped, but still not 100%. I got some Wolff extra power mag springs and it was worse. They seem less stout than the stock ones. Anyone try them in a 30s?

Today, I saw a 30s in the Kansas City Cabelas. It looks okay, but I am not buying any guns until after the fiscal year. The upcoming furlough has me being careful. The price is a bit high at Cabelas.

I still trust my Glock 27 more than I would currently trust the 30s.

If I had to go with a small Glock 45 ACP, I would lean toward the 30, since it has been out a while. Who know what issues will pop up with the 30s?

I love my 2 Gens. I snagged a department issue like the one I carried eighty one numbers after mine, same set up.

I have only shot a few rounds of +P in my 36 because I don't like shooting it with +P. I don't imagine I would like shooting the 30s with +P either. The 30 I had and the HK USP 45C I still have are both quite comfortable with +P.

My local LE shop has boxes of them for $300. Tough to pass up.

LE trades are great buys. I got a Gen 2 G23 LE in January and love it, it is my EDC.

The wider grip of the 30s will absorb +p much better than the G36. Yes, the 30s should have more felt recoil than the G30, but not near as much as as the G36.

G27 Gen4 or Gen 3 ?

Looking to add this one to my collection for ccw. Looking for some feedback from current owners of either gen. Thanks

If you want a bigger mag release button and interchangable backstraps go Gen4. Simple really.

My reason for going gen3, and always will, is because I use the medium size grip. I despise the look of the gen4 with the medium backstrap on. Gen3 it is default and doesn't ruin the lines.

I've had my fair share of gen 3 Glocks and recently add a gen 4 26 to the family and in my opinion the gen 4 is head and shoulders above the rest!!! Good luck and enjoy!!

Nice review! I got into Glocks back in the Gen 2 days and still consider them to be the best Glocks ever made as well as my favorite, based on looks, feel and quality. I've got a 2nd Gen G17, 22, 23 and G31 (hard to find as only a few were made before the changeover to Gen3). I need a nice minty Gen 2 G19. I've owned a Gen 2 G20 and several 21s, but with my medium sized hands I have switched over to the Gen3 20SF and 21SF, which are still great guns.

I sold my Gen 3 G27 and picked up a Gen 4 G27. Feels better in my hands is about the only thing I can say.

97% of the difference is the grip. The mag release? IMHO, it's not a huge deal.

The size and texture of the Gen 4 with no backstraps added is what won out for me.

Both are Glocks, so you can't go wrong with either one, but the Gen 4 gets my vote.

I like my gen 4 because I reversed the mag release so I hit it with my right hand middle finger so that my palm is out of the way when my left hand comes sliding that new mag in by the base plate. Oh and the grip is super nice.

Have you held and shot both generations? That would be high on my list of "feedback." Of course, opinions of present/past owners are good also. My opinion is to go with the gen 4 because it feels right in my hand, shoots well, and very dependable.

A good price would be under $500 for a gen 3. My LGS was at $539. Local Cabela's had 'em at $549. Slander Mountain was displaying them at $599
