Earlier I posted a homemade kahlua recipe:

4 cups distilled water
3 cups sugar
6 tsp instant coffee
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 quart good vodka.

Mix water, sugar, coffee in saucepan and bring
to boil. Simmer for 30 minutes. Set off to side to cool to room temp.
Add vodka and vanilla, then mix well and pour into bottles. Drink when you want. Yum-yum.

Make sure the mix has completely cooled to room temperature before adding the vodka and vanilla.
Also, the key to this is to use a good brand of vodka. Don't skimp here.

I tried it today.
I did not use distilled water. I used tap water.
I did not use real vanilla. I used the cheap imitation kind.
I used some old cheap vodka I already had, instead of the good stuff.

The result????? WOW!!! This is good!!!!
Way better than the store bought kind.
Plus, I'm sure it would be even better if I had used better ingredients. Very easy to make. No fuss.

Regarding the water, distilled water lacks taste we associate with water because mineral elements are missing. Tap water or even bottled water should do just fine and in fact taste better than distilled water.

I agree it would be a waste of expensive vodka if used in a mixture like this. Save it for martinis with women who think they can taste a difference between Stoli and Grey Goose.

I'd say break out the britta, put the cheap vodka through it and the tap water.
