BE for reloading I tend to look at the data and results rather than process of others. I view the U die* as the FCD at the sizing stage, but there's a time and place for it. I could see a small commercial manufacturer using it to make sure it fits a wide range of chambers that his/customers may have (for the record I do not use Lee dies, only Redding). There it may have merit.
I've seen it more with the .40 than others (not surprised), but people just don't seem to want to size correctly, they want the "easy button".

I'm guessing a 9mm Montana Gold in a .40 S&W case.

Competition stuff: great
Dillon support: great
Reloading: very good
* For those that don't know, the U die is an undersize sizing die made by Lee Precision exclusively for Evolution Gun Works aka EGW. It's one thousandth smaller in dimension than their production dies.

It's a great forum. It's just this u-die thing that drives me nuts.

Why?
Before I started roll sizing all my brass I used a U die. Still have it actually.
You gotta remember lots of 40 barrels out there have been hogged out to ensure they run 100%. That means the brass comes out a little on the large side.
They size further down than the Dillon dies for sure.

But the U die sizes down the same as the Lee standard dies. It only sizes the brass .001 smaller than the Lee standard die. The trouble with Lee dies you have a large margin of manufacture tolerance

Did not know that until now. I know EGW was the only place to get it for some time because they asked Lee to make a run of dies for them.

Because they imply the only way to fix the issue is with a U-die. Reality is a good Lee, Redding, Hornady would work to get it to spec without oversizing the brass with a U-die.

I use an EGW undersized die when I want to load thinner headstamp brass like R-P and jacketed bullets. It gives me the neck tension I want, some of my sizing dies that are "standard" can't size the brass down so I get proper neck tension.
I don't actually use my EGW dies that often as I usually save the thinner brass for lead loading where standard sizers work fine.

I'm still not up to speed on the U die. Googled and everything.
I'll just go back to how I was loading before I read this thread.......

Exactly, not saying they don't have a place. Most people don't need it as their primary die either.

The regular Lee sizing die fixed all my 40 S&W woes.
Now if Dillion could help me figure out why my 1050 crushes 3-5 primers every tube, I would be set.
