On pistols with extended mags I've trained myself to not grab the mag.
With my Arsenal SLR-106U the polymer front grip gets very hot.
I can wear gloves and make it work.
But am tempted to just grab the magazine.

I'm worried about potential FTF doing that.
Or loosening the fit on my mags.

I've got Bulgy Circle 10 mags that fit tight as a glove.

What's consensus on holding the magazine on these pups?

never did it on my yugo so cant say. i know its no good on the .22lr AK.

It is considered an acceptable firing technique. The biggest problem with it is if there is an out of battery firing that blows the magazine out of the receiver. The risk of injury is greater.

I do it all the time, I find it comfortable especially when doing a lot of shooting and/or keeping the rifle at ready for long periods. Check out pictures of the Russians and you see them do it a ton too, even their top operators in Alpha Group and Vympel do it.

Haha. AKs don't really do high speed.

You run out from behind a building, scream something about your god of choice, do a mag dump in the general direction of someone else, get your barefooted ass shot by a 5.56, then the next guy can use your AK to do it again tomorrow...

I'm anywhere near the operators here or the speznaz from Russia, but I spent 2 years in Bulgarian Army, also doing a lots of shooting 7.62, and we used to do it all the time.
However, this was not the appropriate technique that we were thought, including by Russian instructors. The thing is - this hold gives you more compact stance, when clearing house or maneuvering in forest for example, as much as AK platform is suitable for this, so my explanation is - that's why it is done this way. New Russian techniques are exactly as Travis is shooting, same way as Larry Vickers and Kyle Lamb are holding the AR - gripping it far forward. I'll see if I can find a video, it's all in Russian but it is interesting to see how they shoot full auto and even AK47 does not move anywhere...
This is of course diferent topic, but cross-reaching under the gun to work the charging handle also was something that they will never teach you, in the army it was always done with your strong hand, while you hold the gun pointed to the threat with your weak hand... I don't have opinion on this, my understanding is that you cock the weapon and you put it on safety, than you need cocking only when you reload and they don't teach you to hit the empty mag with the full-one, this was absolutely unacceptable in my army years, but of course this was so many years ago that it could be perfectly normal now...
Travis have some excellent videos, Andy Stanford, Paul Howe, Kyle and Larry are definitely people that know what they're talking about, not to mention the rest of the good instructors that are riding the AK wave lately, like Gabe for example...
AK could go high speed, especially the smaller caliber... Less recoil than the classic 7.62, more controlability, very flat trajectory for this round, it could be highly effective in properly trained hand... Anyway, I personally would prefer AR platform, but on the other hand - everyone should have an AK and a Glock, so ...

There it is, the guy claims that he holds a patent for this type of holding and shooting the weapon, which I find laughable, but the video speaks for itself, I personally didn't shoot full auto for 20 years and have no position on it but I bet it will be interesting for you.
Note - there is no hold by the mag well ...

The AK's action works at high speed reliably. I cant say the same for the ar-15 , m4, m16 etc. or any other direct gas impingement weapon for that matter.

Holding an AK by the mag is just fine for CQB- but probably not the best way to go for 'controlling the machine'. If heat from the gas tube is an issue, glove(s) is a viable option...

I'd say I hold the mag about 30% of the time because it is the balance point of most AK's. It really works best when shooting behind you over the shoulder.(just kiddin')
