It came a little later than expected, but it is just right for my Get Home Bag. 12 inches of 5160; no zombie worries anymore.

I finally bought my first Bark River knife the other day and it arrived in the mail this afternoon. I picked up the Classic Drop Point Hunter in CPM154 and black/white ebony as I am a fan of Loveless style knives. I had high hopes for this knife after years of reading the hype, but I am disappointed to say the least.

The Cutting Edge

This is the stock photo of the knife.

The fit of the handle scales is abysmal and the wood hangs over the steel by a few thou all the way around. This makes the knife feel rough and cheap. They also show the left side of the knife on their website but not the right. This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that about 10% of the right scale is a big black mess of wood filler. I understand that natural materials vary, but that is straight deception to knowingly put a sub-par scale on the side that you don't show.

The blade itself is fine and I'm sure it will be a great cutter, but for almost the cost of a custom knife, I expect almost the quality of a custom knife and this is far from it. The fact that they put an MSRP of $309 on this heap is laughable. I have many production and custom knives and this is one of the worst I've ever handled from a fit and finish standpoint.

I'll just throw it in my bag and use it like the tool it is, albeit extremely overpriced for what it is. I will not buy another BRKT knife in the future.

On the up side, I do have the bottom one in this picture on the way as well, hopefully it will work out better. It's a Larry Page handmade in CPM154 and Desert Ironwood.

Normally I would, but I am entirely too busy to mess with it. I'll just use it as is and not buy anymore from them.

Well guys I'm 0 for 2 this week. I guess it's time to just stick to what I know.

The Larry page came in today and was almost the exact opposite of the BRKT. The handle fit and finish is immaculate although not nearly as figured as the one in the stock photo above. The blade, however, is ground very unevenly and was dull as could be out of the box. I'd bet that it had somewhere in the neighborhood of a 120 degree inclusive bevel. Wouldn't even attempt to slice printer paper I fixed the dull part, but when I did I saw how unevenly this thing was ground. Definitely not worth what it cost.

I guess I'll have to stick with my local guy even though he's about priced me out of his knives.

I discovered SOG Arc Locks. Like them just as much as my Benchmade Axis locks.
