I purchased a Martin Jaguar six years ago, shot it a couple of times and it’s been in the gun safe ever since. (I know, I know, how pathetic) I pulled it out and was looking it over, even drew it back a few times and everything seems fine. The string looks in perfect condition. Thoughts on shooting it…. or should I have it re-strung?
I've shot some pretty old bowstrings. Maybe wax it first or take it to a shop and let them look at it. A good shop hopefully won't con you into replacing it if it doesn't need it.

I would definitely consider getting a new string/cable set. Compounds are left strung and therefore are under constant stress whether you're shooting them or not. I've heard a few say that 3 years is about the most you can get from a string with minimal shooting and I've seen at least one bow with a string over 3 years old come apart while sitting on the rack due to a string finally giving up the ghost. A good set of strings cost lest than $100 from one of the small builders so it's a relatvely small investment for safety.
One of the advantages to a trad bow; the strings are cheaper to replace, and last longer when not in use. I had a Bear TD recurve that was strung 24/7 for 4 years. I shot it for a year before and after that w no problems.
