Thanks for the reminder. Since the Sears catalog now uses glossy paper, I should buy some copies of "It Takes a Village" and "The Audacity of Hope" for this use.

A couple of my questions after reading this whole thread are,

1: why is it that so many people think you cannot live off wildlife and crops?

2:How in the hell did man make it before canned food?

3:Why do others get so hung up on being right on the interweb?

4:Since when do city-folk think they "know" what it takes to survive without processed foods?

5:And why do they think I care what they think about the country, bugging out, hunting or anything else, country related?

And for a closer, DO NOT BUG OUT,,stay in your homes in the event of a disaster, the .gov will save you. There is nothing to eat in the country, you will die within hours due to exposure.

Because almost nobody has actually done it in over 50 years or a generation or two.

And modern farming ag has let the population explode beyond a reasonable balance. We might NOT be able to at this point...

He didn't always make it.

I have no idea. I think it is a lot of people who are wrong in real life most of the time.

Based on my address, you'd think I was city folk. City folk come from somewhere. Often it is the country.

But I really think a good well prepared bug in is generally / often a way better strategy than an ill conceived bug out....

Because people outnumber large forms of wildlife by 10, 20, or more to one, depending on where you live. It might be possible to survive off one's crops, but if you want a steady supply of meat, I think it will require a "crop" of chickens or rabbits. And of course, a way to feed them.

Fewer people, more wildlife. Fewer people, more farmers.

He is - the world hit 1 billion people in 1800. It is estimated to hit 10 billion in 2050/60. From now to then that is about a 40% increase in people in the world who need, food, clothing, shelter, and jobs. If there is a SHTF event we can plan on, it is that.

We can make up theories, but population grows with the availability of food. Our technology made a LOT more food available easily. Have a SHTF of whatever proportion and the amount of food available without all the tech - be it refrigeration, trucks, farm equipment, chem fertilizer, etc...will go down.

The question is does the population go down proportionatel. If it doesn't, problem. That would be any SHTF where the pop of a city is left even 50% intact.

I would modify the above to:
population grows inversely to the cost of of food.

Modern chemical farming and relatively cheap oil which provided the world with relatively inexpensive food. With the increase in the price of oil, food production land going to produce bio fuels and the increase in population that will change.

A quick change in that dynamic would cause starvation and political instability in many countries. Many 2nd and 3rd world countries subsides basic food stuffs. The USA does that with food stamps.

Much needed levity in a thread where people got insanely serious about nothing!!

Didnt read all the threads, so sorry if this has already been mentioned. The good prepper Did Not listen to all the experts and only buy 9mm handguns and .22LR and .223 rifles because "you can find ammo anywhere for them" Heck its the only caliber ammo you cant find anywhere and we havent even had a real crisis, just a bunch of paranoia.
The bad prepper just stock piles ammo and never practices. My son has a mountain cabin. He also spent six years in the military serving in an EOD unit and he has worked with various special operations units around the world. His closest mountain neighbor is a prepper and has built a bunker and has stock piled years of supplies. The problem is that he is so afraid to use any of his precious ammo that he never practices shooting/tactics to defend himself and his family.
My son said that if him and some of his military buddies showed up they could take the guy out of his bunker and get all of his supplies in about 15 minutes if they wanted to. Even though he would never do that. Some people just dont know how unprepared they really are.
For the record Im a backpacker, hunter and know a few things about wilderness survival. I keep a few emergency supplies but I myself am not a prepper.

.
Lots of people like this. I think that sometimes prepping just turns into hoarding. The people that use their preps in everyday life are the ones most likely to be successful, IMO.

It is a fine line to walk, being well practiced or having stock when you need it. You can't buy ammo anywhere around here right now, so we don't go practice either. When ammo comes back, we will go back to the range. Meanwhile we practice around the house with Airsoft and BB guns.

I think backpacking is a great way to learn about everything a person needs from head to toe because you have to have what you need with you, you are relying upon yourself, your abilities, and knowledge.
