When I'm in the market for a flash drive, I always keep an eye out here:

OCZ has a 16GB drive that goes on sale at NewEgg pretty frequently for about $16.

You have to save at least 10% of the hard drive space for swap files.
If your disk is too full it will indeed run like crap.
