Edited to add:
Earlier that year, my mother had remarried. She and her new husband had gone on a long term vacation. They spent the night in New York City on the eve of 9-11-01.. I'm sure that the towers were falling in their rear view mirror as the left NY city that morning.
It took us HOURS to contact my mom, that day, to be certain that she was okay.
(The entire marriage was not a great experience, and it ended in 2003.
9-11-1 foreshadowed what my sisters and I felt from the get go with this relationship. I'm so sorry my mom had to walk through this; she is too, now!) But she was okay that day, for which I am eternally grateful!
