...nothing happens when I do.
You reckon it's my security settings?

You might have javascript, or an aspect of it, disabled. I had that problem a long time ago on another board system and that proved to be what was doing it. Once I turned javascript back on it worked fine.
If you are in Firefox:
1. Tools
2. Options
3. Content
4. Enable Javascript
5. Apply/OK
I can't remember where to do it in IE because I haven't used it in ages, but I'm sure it's in the Tools > Internet Options menu.

Likely, as said above, you have Javascript disabled. I use Noscript and they don't work either unless I whitelist GT.
