New uniform?

So I keep hearing rumors that the Army is planning on changing the ACU uniform to a multicam pattern uniform. Any truth to this?

Yes, they are getting money from Congress to get the troops in Afghanistan more appropriate camo patterns. ACU ain't makin' it.

Precisely what dusty said. I read it in our news letter this past weekend at drill. Had some pictures and all.

This is the result of many requests from the soldiers over in the sand box right now. The ACU just ain't cutting it.

Khaki would work much better than ACU's for a desert environment, in fact khaki works better than most of the desert camoflauge patterns that I have seen used in Iraq.

We are hearing that rumor as well. Some even say it has started being issued to some units. I haven't seen it yet. Heck, I'm already wearing ACU's, Flame Resistant ACU's and Air crew ACUs - maybe next time they can make 1 uniform that works for everybody.

Here's some irony - my super-duper Army Combat Uniform is NOT authorized to be worn in combat theaters because it melts and burns to easily.

Far to expensive to issue one uniform that has the flame resistant aspects required in certain fields and also has to be inspected and replaced on a 6 month average. Think about it, how many Garrison POGs will never really need to worry about burning to death in a Bradley or a Hawk. Much cheaper as the Army see's it to just issue those guys the Normal cheap uniform and save the gucci gear for the people that need it.

What they really need to stop doing is trying to put the cammo pattern on our gear so we can use it after the uniform changes patterns again in 6-10 years.

Nobody, including mail clerks and S1 guys, is allowed to wear the regular issue ACU's in a combat theater. Since just about everybody goes to a combat theater, I don't think it's a money saving thing. I've been back in the Army reserve for 2 years and have been issued 12 combat uniforms (6 sets of ACUs - drill sergeant issue - 4 sets of FRACU's and 2 sets of air crew ACU's).

As far as the multi-cam ACU's - when I logged onto AKO this morning, the picture on the front was a sniper from 3rd Ranger Bn. wearing the multicam ACU. That's a pretty official source.

If by garrison you mean back in the U.S., no. If, by Garrison you mean on the FOB, yes - regular ACU's are not allowed to be worn anywhere in Afghanistan.

When did that change? I was in A-stan 06-07, I was a door gunner so wore flightsuits anyways, but all the other folks wore regualr ACU's....untill the 82nd rolled in, their flight crews wore the flight ACU's.

Anyway I'm showing my age too, I wore DCU's in Iraq (just before the change to ACU's...our replacing unit wore ACU's) and tan flight suits in A-stan (again the replacing unit wore ACU flight suits).

Funny thing about the ACU in A-stan, while coming in for a landing to pick up grunts outside the FOB they would stand out like soar thumbs unless on/near gravel or rocks.

Who cares how ugly the uniform is, as long as it does it's job so we can do ours.

Nit sure when it changed, but now the standard is FRACU's - look the same as regular ACUs but are flame retardent and have a little square of nylon sewn to the cuff so you can tell it's the right uniform. We also wear air crew uniforms - the 2-piece ACU ones - but I don't know how widespread those are among non-aircrews.

It doesn't matter about ugly - the uniform just doesn't do anything very well. If we have to have a garrison utility uniform and a combat uniform, we might as well issue the old green fatiques back in the US - at least they looked good.
