OpenDNS

Would anyone care to explain OpenDNS and its benefits in simple terms? Would appreciate it. Thanks for any responses.

It's pretty simple. Instead of using your IPS's DNS servers your use the OpenDNS server. You then create account and add your network. If you don't have a static IP then you install a client that automatically updates your account with your current IP. Then you decide what you want to filer by selecting categories; porn, auction sites, gambling, etc. You can also block specific sites by URL as well as allow specific sites if it is blocked by the category. I don't use any filtering on my home network but I do use their DNS servers because they are more responsive that my ISP's.

Thanks srhoades for the attempt. I have ATT DSL behind a router and can it already has some of the features of blocking that you mention. So I quess it offers me no benefit. I read a bit about it's ability to change between two DNS addresses to speed throughput. True?

I have AT&T Uverse and I was constantly getting "could not load page" errors. I can't change the DNS servers in the Uverse router so I assigned my desktop a static IP with the OpenDNS servers and the problem went away. You won't see an increase in throughput, but you will see a decrease in the amount of time it takes for your browser to resolved the URL and contact the website.

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Those are the OpenDNS servers.
