Range Report Saiga AK 47 12-14-09

Range Report 12-14-09
Gun: Saiga AK 47
Caliber: 7.62x39
Optic: Aimpoint ML2 4 moa dot
Range and position: 50 yards off sand bags
Purpose: To determine which ammo was the most accurate in this weapon.
The Kalashnikov Klub

Well some folks were saying I should try some ammo other than Wolf to realize the potential of my Saiga in the accuracy department. I gathered what ammo I could in my small community. I was able to get American Eagle, Cheetah (African ammo), Remington 125 grain soft points, PMS 125 grain ball, and some Russian JHP rounds (may have been wolf) and of course some of the Wolf 125 grain FMJ I already had.

Here is how the shooting went.

Wolf.
1. 1.51
2. 3.26
3. 1.40
4. 1.74
Average group size 1.98

I then fired a department rifle qualification with my Saiga. I wanted to try out the new Krebs Safety I had installed. Before when I shot these quals I would cheat and leave the safety off to make the times. With the Krebs I did not have to. I could easily manipulate the safety with my trigger finger. I really like this safety. It fixes one of my biggest complaints with this rifle design.

I really like this rifle. It is easily one of the most accurate AKs I have ever owned. I only dropped 2 points on the rifle qualification and that was on the moving and shooting. I found that Wolf ammo is not that bad in an AK for accuracy. The American Eagle was the only thing better. PMC sucked.

I am sure magnification would help a bit. But in my experience you can do pretty good work with a red dot or irons if you know what you are doing.

Are you sure it was Wolf?

Wolf HP's aren't too bad for accuracy in my experience, Wolf FMJ on the other hand...

Due to inflation, my $.02 no longer matters.

Not sure what the JHP's were other than they were russian. They are old. Probably been sitting in his shop for 10 years.

Took my SGL 21 out about 5 hours ago, Very impressed with it, tight groups with the fiocchi FMJ the wolf black box and mil classic did really well also, that gun shoots better than I do. Best 499.00 gun I 've ever bought, cept for my glocks.

From all the range reports I have seen over the past 12 years, Brown Bear
HP or FMJ made by the Barnaul Machine Tool Building Plant has been praised as the most precise Russian imported ammo for 7.62x39. Winchester soft points has been praised more often than other domestic softpoints that I can remember. Typically I have read of winchester softpoints performing between 1-2 MOA but we all know results can vary. The new corbon DPX looks promising and it definitely has a .310 bullet. I have not seen any posted range reports of people shooting it.

The new double tap ammo has a very good bullet design (VMAX) for exceptional accuracy. I got some boxes of this ordered and plan to try it out soon. A range report with pictures will be the least I post maybe more.

The new V Max loads looks promising for finally offering a bullet to the 7.62x39 that would have good wound ballistics and limited penetration in urban settings.
