Best .22lr Plinker $300 or under

I'm just starting to build my handgun collection, and I'm to the point where I want to get a .22 lr semi-auto to plink with/shoot with beginners. I don't want to spend much over $300. My buddy has a Walther P22 that doesn't exactly make my socks go up and down. Then again, nothing compares to the Model 41 I grew up shooting

. Alas, out of my price range. Any suggestions?

If you want a rock solid .22 look for used Rugers, Brownings, Hi Standards.

I have a Beretta U-22 Neos. It looks like its straight outta Buck Rogers...but shoots like a dream. One downside about it though is the lack of aftermarket parts for customization.

So far looks like it's between the Ruger MKII or MKIII, or the Browning. The Neos got good reviews but loses because it's so freaking ugly. I like the "look" of the Browning the best.

Any of the Ruger's would fit the bill, I pretty fond of my 22/45 with 4 inch bull barrel.

I also have plans of throwing away that $200 to the gov. Any1 running one of these with a can? I'm really just trying to decide between the p22 and mosquito. My girl has a mark II, great gun but looking for something a little different.

The P22 and mosquito are hit or miss. Some people like them, some people have nothing but problems with theirs...

I've got a P22, that was good for about the first 1000-1500 rounds. Now it doesn't work so great. I'll have at least 3 FTF/FTE per magazine now...

Thanks man, kinda leaning toward the sig. The p22 is just a little too small for my hand. I've heard there's problems with the sig out right out of the box (FTF). I'll be getting the p22 or mosquito within a couple weeks. All ready youtubed these two guns to death, figured i'd stop here for any last minute advice.

Any1 else with info, or better yet, any1 thats owed both, i'd really like your input.

Sounds like you need a Ruger MkII

Not sure what these go for in the US, its a S&W 2206 and uses the same mags as the 41.

Its a great shooter, I think they make a light weight model with an alloy frame, the S&W 622 I think, might be something to look for.

That 622 looks pretty slick. Big gun for a .22 chambering, probaly really fun to shoot. Ruger mk III has last shot hold open right?

Yes, so does the Mark II which, in my opinion, is a better gun.

The one in the pic is actually my 2206 which is all stainless compared to the 622 which has an alloy frame. The extra weight makes the recoil almost non existent.
It's never hit me as being an overly large .22, its quite slim and fits my hand nicely.

If you want a big .22 though;

I picked up that S&W 41 only a couple weeks ago, I think I paid $300 or $350 for just the pistol with 7" inch barrel and another $200 for the other top end that has the compensator.

As far as I know the Ruger MKIII have last shot hold open, all mine are MKII's though.

Just getting into the whole .22 target pistol scene. honestly i thought i'd be getting the mosquito or walther. Definately opened my eyes, I'll most likely be looking into the mk III now. Thanks guys!

One last question b4 i leave you guys alone. What are the major differences between the mkII and III? I'd much rather have that traditional mag release vice the lever you find on the MKII.

RUGER MKIII

1) Magazine disconnect/release location and different magazines.

2) Magazine safety.

3) Loaded chamber indicator.
