Money to burn! Plea for tactical help

I really hope this doesn't become too long winded and rambling, but I ain't promising nuthin'.

This doesn't necessarily fit this forum, but I'm posting it here, since there are tactical minded folks present. I've sold a gun and saved up some cash, so now I have some spending money. I've hemmed and hawed for a few weeks, and I've decided to build up the tactical side of my arsenal, since (1) I have every hunting gun I want and (2) Obama.

My budget is $1200. I'll be able to save up more but not for at least another year (this is my last hurrah before our daughter is born). I know that the chances of me ever needing to actually use any of this in a tactical or home defense situation is extremely low, but boy scouts are always prepared. Plus, don't we sometimes like having guns, just cuz? Any insights, options, or onery comments toward the following would be appreciated.

Option 1:
Glock 20 10mm and Mossberg 590A1. I can get these delivered for about $1050, which leaves plenty left over for dies, brass, bullets, and ammo. Over time, I would spend another $125 on an extended ported Lone Wolf barrel, $250 on a Streamlight TLR-2 (Glock 20), and $150 on a TLR-1 and mount (590A1). Total eventual spent would be $1575.

Option 2:
AR-15 in 5.56 NATO. I already have a DPMS LR-308 AP4 (16" barrel M4gery), but the reason I'm considering an AR in 5.56 is entirely so I have an excuse to get a Armatac 150rd drum mag. Way cool, way expensive, but possibly more practical for ammo availability if we ever had to bug out or in. Armatac mags are $550, so considering I spend $1000 on an AR, the price is about the same as the first option. $1550.

The first option is more practical for actual home defense. The second one is more practical in that 5.56 NATO ammo is easiest and cheapest to find, and if the government ever chokes off the ammo supply, it will be the cheapest to reload and powder will last longer.

Really, honestly, I just like to shoot guns at the range. I think they both have a serious fun factor. Low recoiling AR with a super-high capacity mag, or two short range heavy boomers. What do you think?

The AR, might not be "practical" but:

1. The other 2 really have no threat of Government interference anytime soon whereas the AR you are wanting most likely will not either but might.

2. You seem to want the AR more anyways.

3. You can keep building on the AR as time progresses.

Just my .02

AR, use it for HD also. Besides concealability or hunting birds, just about anything a handgun or shotgun can do, the AR can do better.

I'd get a BCM AR15.

I have never heard that about a drum mag...I wanted one when I first got an AR, decided against it, and glad I did. $550 goes a long ways towards other nice AR goodies. Look up BCM and Magpul, hang around these forums for a bit, get a nice AR and some 30 rounders, a couple 20 rounders (easier to move around with, keep in the gun).

I will be rambling but only because I was in your shoes not long ago...

Any reason why a Glock 20? You know the 10mm is overkill for HD and for most other things, ammo ain't cheap, overpenetration is a factor, takes a lot of powder, big pistol primer, etc. Consider a 9/40 frame and save $100 right there on the sales price and cost of ammo. ($500)

Mossberg 590 is a cool weapon, especially with the bayonet (there's a version that comes with it) but for HD and for the price, I'd go with the Mossberg M930SPX semi-auto with the M1913 rail on top for optics and it shoots as fast as any Benelli or 11-87. ($700)

The AR is cool, and that's the route I went with after all is said and done but I live in the People's Republic of Kommiefornistan where Ahnuld, Feinstein, Boxer, and Waxman all conspire to bring about the socialist revolution. Who knows when all evil black rifles will be banned here so I got mine while the gettin's good.

As for the mag, ******tactical.com has the AR-15 Betamags (100 rounds capacity) for $295. I am so getting one of those! Comes with a nifty carrying pouch too, like the gas masks. How can you say no?

This is just my opinion and I'm not trying to change your mind.
I have a 21 and a 17. Both easy to load, boatload of components,
brass, bullets, dies, etc,. cheaper too.
Can shoot a lot of 9mm cheaper than .45acp and a lot cheaper and easier
to find than 10mm. I use to have a Colt Delta Elite.
I am a Remington 870 man. Take a look at the 870 Express HD.
7 shot, reliable, lot of aftermarket things if you want.
Go to www.aiptactical.com and read some of aippi's comments.

AR's, Oh Lord, I'm hooked.
I love mine, I have a Colt and the last parts on the way for a full
BCM rifle. I can't say enought about BCM's. They are great and
I'm sure I'll have another later on.
I can't see paying $550. for a mag that holds 150 rounds when I
could buy 5 quality 30rd. Pmags for $75 or less that holds the same
amount. For the $550 you could buy a bunch of ammo, Pmags, and
a very nice chest harness, or rapid deployment bag.

Only you know what you really want, so get what makes you happy
and you can always add to, or get the other things later.
I have my own list of goodies I want for my AR's, Glocks, and
shooting hobby, so just take these comments with a grain of salt.

At least in Georgia, you have the freedom to buy what you want, unlike here.

IMHO, diversify... Do you already have any handguns or shotguns? If not, then get some, if so... then get yourself a AR-15. I personally would (did) get good handgun and shotgun before an AR.

There is a valid point that you will always be able to buy a handgun and shotgun, but I don't think there is too much of a likelyhood that they are going to be creating any new AWB laws in the near future. I was a lot more nervous a year ago than I am now.

I know those upgrades look cool (ported barrel, pistol light, drum mag), but there's also a reason most people don't use them: not worth the money. Keep it simple. You can get an AR and a Glock for $1500.

Good guy to deal with if you are wanting an 870 or 870 parts.
