Shotgun ammo queation?

This may sound silly but is there such a thing as high brass bird shot? I have heard some folks say that their semi-auto shotguns tend to not like low brass bird shot? Thats odd to me because most semi-autos are based on bird hunting shotguns in the first place? Can you buy bird shot with a little more powder?

I want to plink with my semi-auto but I dont want to plink with 00-buck.

I have not seen commercial HB bird shot in many years. I have not been looking for it either.

Years ago I believe all brass was high brass. All the bulk pack stuff is low brass

They make low power shot and you need to stay away from it. It's been a while but for some reason I want to say 7/8oz.
The standard stuff should be ok.... what is it? 1-1/8" oz? I shoot it in my super-x2 all the time.

My fairly new Remington 1100 Tactical does not do well with light loads (7.5 @ 1200 fps or slower). It works very well with faster loads (7.5 @ 1300 fps and plus like Win AASC-0127)). Many of the Remington 1100s I know of perform similarly.

Howdy mixflip,

I have an old Rem 1100 12ga and it will shoot anything that will fit in the mag tube from the lightest low brass to the hottest 2 3/4" max buckshot.

It's not at all picky.

Most of the pheasant loads are hi-brass #6's or #7.5.

ok good to know. thanks stengun. I am going to buy a few different types of ammo ammo and see what happens with my 11-87 special purpose? Its got brand new rings and gasket so I am expecting good things with everything I put in it.

I used the same 11-87 for duck and goose hunting and it was great. Try to take it skeet shooting with some light loads and it wouldn't cycle at all. I ended up getting rid of it because I couldn't practice with it skeet and trap shooting. Interested to hear how yours does.

3 1/2" #4 steel shot is high brass. A duck is bird, right?

I dont think my 11-87 shoots 3 1/2" shells though? The barrel only says 2 3/4" and 3"

Nope, definitely do
NOT want to shoot the 3.5" shells (if you could cram them in there).

My brother has a Stoeger Semi-auto and he was telling me something about shooting a case of the heaviest, fastest stuff you could find. This would break-in the gun and 'set' the springs and such. Then you can come back and shoot 7/8oz and 1 oz stuff without any hitches. Not sure if that is true. Anyone heard this before?

High brass bird shot is available all over the place, it's just expensive. The Federal Premium stuff is high brass, it's usually around $17 a box of 25, as compared to their $22 for a box of 100 low brass at Wal-Mart. It's all over the web, always stocked at Gander Mountain, probably stocked most everywhere else too. Often other brands are advertised as "heavy field" or high velocity.

Please, the day of telling if a load is lt or hvy is long gone by looking at the brass.

What you want to look for is the dram equivalent or the fps if the dram equivalent is not posted.

Most autos some "claim" should shoot at the min 1 1/8 oz of shot and a 3 dram or more equivalent. The size of the shot doesn't matter to cycle the gun.

If the gun is new shoot at least a couple boxes of stout lds before one decides the gun wont run and make sure it is cleaned and lubed. Break in of a SG is sometimes required. Gas guns need to make sure the gas system is cleaned and lubed also - not just the action.

Other than saying it can there is no reason to shoot lt 7/8 loads in an auto.

Same here.
When I bought my 1100 Magnum, new, in 1983, it came with a 30" 'Full' choke barrel. (It's actual choke is closer to X-Full according to a local gunsmith.)

That shotgun would fire and cycle 2-3/4" and 3" shells, interchangeably!
It will even cycle my favorite handload of Red Dot and 7-1/2 shot cruising along at 1200 fps.
Actually, if I put that 30" barrel back on my beloved 1100, I'm sure it would cycle anything I put in it.
