S&W 1076 - Opinions from owners please

When it rains it pours....

Been looking for a S&W 1006 and came upon three S&W 1076 guns in one shop. Two had de-cockers, one did not. One out of the 3 one was in beautiful condition the other two were fair. Asking price was about $540 for mint one, not including tax.

Read the de-cocker guns had a recall at one point but found little else on them except they were the ones adopted by the FBI for a very brief stint. Only a few were sold to the public.

Need opinions from those who own this model. Any input much appreciated. Can these guns sustain a pounding of full house 10MM or should these be treated like a S&W Mod 19, magnums once in awhile but 38SPL loading for the majority of shooting?

The Smith 3rd series guns are built like tanks and can stand up to whatever pounding you can inflict on them. If the recall was performed there should be two indentations beneath the decocker lever.

All 1076's have the frame dococker lever. The gun that didn't, if it was the same physical size was either a 1066 (slide safety/decocker) or a 1086 DAO.

$540 is a good price.

I'd second that. Mine is great and I prefer the decocker as unlike the slide mounted safety I can't accidently put the safety on when I cycle the slide. As long as you are not planning on shooting a diet of double taps ammo through it and change the recoil springs I think you'll be OK. I'd buy another as a spare myself.

I have a 1076 and agree with the above, get one. I would lean more towards the 76 than the 86. I base that on the DA on my 76 is a little heavy and I am thinking the 86 is prob the same.

I've shot some stout home rolled 10's with no problems.

Several LEOs used them for a while and I think that is where a bunch of the ones that turned up recently came from.

As for FBI guns, a couple of things to look for.... Curved backstrap grips with the palmswell and they do not have the mag disconnect.

As far as Ive heard all the S&W 10xx guns are good to go for whatever you throw at them. I gotta get at least one someday. Most likely ill get a full size and a compact model. Someday when I get money. I only ever wish there was a double stack model that was made.

The Kentucky State Police use the 1076's for a number of years and were very happy with them. They are great guns a little heavy but built like a tank and shoot very well.

The S&W 1076 is a classic all-steel 10mm pistol. Every 10mm fan should have at least one Smith 10XX-series gun in their collection - and if you're lucky enough to find one, the 1076 is a great choice, whether it's the civilian "commercial" version or a lightly-used L.E. unit.

I've had mine since the very early '90s (a former L.E. 1076 acquired in pristine condition). It's still going strong today. After getting it, I slightly up-ed the recoil spring over factory-spec with a Wolff XP spring, and replaced all mag springs w/ XP Wolffs. Make sure you run your mags w/ the WHITE followers, as those were the latest in the 10XX-series design.

Also, check beneath the black decocker tab for two horizontally spaced "dots" (like so: . .). Their presence indicates that S&W corrected that gun's trigger unit with an upgrade, which they initiated as a recall "fix" for all the "XX76/XX26" frame-mounted decocker 10XX- & 45XX pistols.

I want one these! I have tons of 10mm ammo and only my 20SF to shoot them out of. But we can't get them into Cali because they are off-roster. I saw one last week listed here in SoCal but the guy wanted $1500 for it.
