AR newbie......FINALLY

Greetings ladies and gents!

A couple of weeks ago, I finally joined the ranks of the AR owners. I discovered a Rock River lower at the sporting goods store in my hometown. $150 later, I had my birthday present. I have a few questions as I start my building process. Well, one really, and it has to do with barrel twist rate. I'm sure this is a topic that has been done to death.

I understand that the 1:7 barrels are ideal for bullet weights up to 80 grains (I've shot Black Hlls 77 grain before, great stuff). That being said, how will it handle lighter weight rounds, say the typical 55gr FMJs?

Wish me luck!

Man, you are late to the party (so was I). What kind of upper are you going to get to go with that RRA lower? Are you going to use it for competition or range fun plus self defense?

A lower is not really an AR, you still have a ways to go, and even when it's done you're never really done. You'll understand what I mean soon enough. Hold on to your wallet!

I'm going to go with an old school A2 upper with 20 inch barrel. I would love to get good enough to do some competitions, but in the interim (whenever that will be, gotta finish the build first) I'll have plenty of fun at the range (ie, my back yard) and have a great extra asset in self defense (my G22 might get a night off duty, lol). Also, it's something else to help keep the varmint population (rabbits, prarie dogs, etc) down.

If you meant brand, that is yet to be determined. I'm leaning towards a unit from Model 1. It's less then $400, which is bonus.

1:8 barrels offer the best of both worlds, otherwise I would also go with a 1:7 twist rate, which is offered by most of the major AR companies.

My 1/7's do fine with 55gr ammo.
