Mossberg 590 Questions
I have a Mossberg 590 20" barrel. Is it possible to put on a 18.5" barrel? New tube needed? Where can I get parts? I like my shotgun, just wish it was slightly smaller. If I could convert it to SBS I would. I'm not certain here in Indiana where I live if I can register for SBS? What's the police 590's barrel length? 14"? I'll just ask about the 18.5" since that's MUCH easier... I hope.
I like this 18.5" barrel adjustable model. Where could I find the barrel with the sights like this one?

It will be alot easier to just buy the 18.5" model you want and sell the 20" you have. The only place that I can think of that might have just the barrel would be AIMPRO. They will also do the conversion for you but it will probably cost the same as just buying another shotgun.
BTW, the adjustable stock on that 590 is ATI crap.

Thanks. I may give AIMPRO a call just to inquire prices... May end up with these... Took from their website...

Why would you do something like that to a perfectly good firearm?

Just kidding with those pics. I just want a 18.5" barrel with the sights on them (like my first pic) and 6-shot tube to replace my 20" barrel and 9-shot tube. May be easier to trade...
Basically this...

with my same stock. Here's what I have now.

Converting a 20" 590 to 18.5 inch would be very difficult since the attachment point for the barrel is at the end of the 20" barrel. Plus you bayonet would stick out to far. If you want to save the 1.5" just get a 500. Sell your 590 or get an additional shotgun. I went with both.
A Knoxx Spec-Ops stock, a sling, and maybe some rifle sights are about all I would add to a HD style shotgun but do whatever you would like with yours.

If you either have the conversion done or just trade for a 18.5", Vang Comp makes an extension that will give you another round in the mag.

I am not sure how they are installed in the frame but I am not sure the economics makes sense.
New 18.5" barrel on Brownells $115
Magazine Tube $30
Magazine Spring $5
$150 in parts minimum. If you have to use a gunsmith to change it add at least $50 putting you at $200. You can get a brand new 500 18.5" 5+1 for $250-300 or trade your 590 for the 500 and probably pocket some money. You may also have warranty issues with Mossberg if you change it around to much or at least you will confuse them when you talk about your 18.5" 590 since they don't make one.

They make 18.5" 590A1s. All the 590s are 20". The A1s have different features. Metal trigger group and metal safety.
Either way you have the same issue. The mag tube will not allow a 18.5" barrel. You have to replace the barrel and the mag tube. To do it you may save $50-$100 on the cost of buying a new 500 the way you want it.
The barrel is easy to change once you have the tube right, Might call Mossberg and ask them how you change it. If you want rifle sights and speedfeed as you show the price will go higher.

I plan on getting a 590a1 one of these days and I want the one you have. The 20" 9-shot with bead sights. I want to add a Speedfeed stock to it because the one I want doesn't come with one.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want the 18.5" over the 20" you already have?

I've grown bored of my 20" bead sight. I'd rather have a 14" barrel, but 18.5" is the easiest, legal, way to get the barrel smaller. I've had the gun for ten years and has done everything I ask of it, but a little too long. Even thought about putting a pistol grip on it instead of the stock. So far, if the 18.5" idea doesn't seem easy enough, I may put a EOtech on it. My eyes get blurry using the bead. Been shootings slugs only the last few years. Gun is pretty accurate out to 50yds.. Again, just bored of 20". Don't really need 8+1 tube. Now I'm about comfort and need. I used my shotgun as a house gun, but always thought it was too long to work with. Would prefer the shorter barrel, five shot tube, and 3-dot sights or a red dot. Ideally, I don't want to buy something new, just alter what I have to personal preference. I think here in Indiana I can register my shotgun as a SBS/AOW to get the 14" barrel. Why? Just cause I can and I would prefer the short barrel length for the applications I'm doing.

Well you could just sell it and buy an 18'' 870 police magnum with wilson ghost ring sights and a pistol grip speedfeed stock. Mossberg also makes a really good ghost ring set up too for the 590A1. I use to own a 18.5 " 590A1 with ghost rings, it was a great weapon. But I actually like the 20" better for the added ammo capacity.
But really it would probably cost more than its worth to convert it. And a ghost ring will work much better for you eyes IMHO than the bead sight.
The rem police models come in true 18" instead of the 18.5" and are much lighter and don't rattle like a mossberg. And the remington 870 MCS is the ultimate pump if youre willing to pay for the paperwork to buy one.
