sighting in optic
New BUIS and red dot. Can I just zero my irons, and then while looking down the sights, dial the dot just over the front post and I'm good? (Or goodish?)

That will get you pretty close; I'd still check it before trusting my life to it, or taking it hunting and risking wounding an animal.

I'll definately make sure it's right by the time I'm done. I figured doing it this way will use up fewer rounds.

Yes. That's the way to do it. Then fine tune the red dot.

Get a laser boresighter for $30 and do it right. How did you plan on sighting your irons without shooting? If you're going to be shooting, might as well sight in your red dot correctly.

 I never said that.
My brother inlaw has a laser boresight, I'll be using that to start with, but all that does is get the scope aligned with the bore axis. I'm talking about after that's done.

Assumine that you mounts allign properly (not putting the iron low in the red dot window), your method described above is the correct method.
And assuing your irons are correct there should be no need for additional adjustments.

If that's good enough for you then so be it.
But why would you go through the trouble driving to your shooting spot and sighting your irons in and then just "eyeball" the zero on your red dot that you purchase with your hard earned money.
That just seems lazy to me.

once the irons are good doing that will get you very close and you wont need to take too many shots to get it near perfect.

I have done this several times. I know if I have two fixed points, I can adjust a third point inbetween those points. I have never considered myself extraordinary in this ability.
Please explain why this would be an issue. It appears to be simple engineering.
