.223 HD ammo
i have been looking around for some ammo for home defence and was looking at hornady tap because its suppost to fragment. i never really thought of the AR so much as a HD gun cause i thought it would over penetrate. after asking around and seeing some tests done i found you are more likely have a pistol round over penetrate then a good non fmj .223. [ standard A2 20'' 1 in 7 twist colt]
any suggestions?

I just bought and tested five types of HP match ammo to test for accuracy.
The Hornday rounds (75grn match) were not good from my 16" 1/9 barrel.
Hands down, the 50m and 100m accuracy winner was Prvi Partizan .223 75grn Match HP. Best price is either from ammunition to go or aim surplus. (Number 2 is Silver Bear 62gn, go figure?)
I'm going to try the PP 68gn Match next.

I tried the Hornady as well and found it was not as accurate out of my 16.5 in barrel. I was suprised that so far the best SD ammo I found as far as accurracy goes is the Federal HP 200 Bulk from WM.I have tried Hornady, Prvi, and Remington.

I am not using anything for HD/SD that will not easily penetrate 2 sheets of 1/2 inch drywall.

IIRC, it's only reserved for LE by limitations put on dealers via Horandy.

Yeah but there are some greedy people who sell it thru auctions on gunbroker and other sites. There was one website that sold it directly too, ammo4less or something..

75 grains is a little on the heavy side for a 1:9 twist. Also, a shorter barrel sometimes needs a faster twist to stabilize the same round properly.
