Does anyone have any experience with Ahrends grips?

I'm looking to replace the (gawdy) ones on my Performance Center 1911 .38 Super +P.

I'm considering these:

I never had a set, Cobra, but I've seen them before.

They're very well made and attractive from what I remember.

They would look great on your Performance Center.

I've never seen their 1911 grips in person, but I've heard lots of good things about their S&W revolver grips.

Now that the quality criteria has been established, now the question is aesthetics...

Apparently, they don't offer engraved reliefs of a blood dripping dagger, skull & cross-bones, or a 3-D of Hillary stepping out of the shower.

Cobra, as you know, I really like the half checkered look.

I have them on my Nighthawk Enforcer.

I also like the Spalted Maple grips on my other Nighthawk.

They make good quality grips, but use a poor polyurethane finish. You may want to opt for the more expensive hand rubbed oil finish.

I bought a pair of retro targets for a Smith&Wesson Model 14. They were very pretty, and the fit was outstanding. In the course of weekly range practice last summer, and the corresponding cleanings. The finish became tacky, and started coming off.

I was very careful not to get any solvent on the grips, but that didn't stop the finish from going bad. Since I have experience refinishing wood, I plan to do the job myself.
I just haven't gotten to it yet.

That's a shame. I guess you could always get some custom work.

Another company to look at if you're willing to settle for something that's classy and not lame is RAASCO. I have a set of their grips, and have talked others into getting more, and we've all been really pleased.

Eyescream, thanks for the RAASCO link! I like their Dymondwood and Cocobolo grips, and the fact that they take into consideration the ambi safety cut for guys who happen to be left handed.

I'll be ordering something in the next day or two after I've had a chance to noodle on color, grain texture, and checkering coverage that suits a stainless 1911. Of course I'd like to hear more from all of you guys on that. Bac makes good points in the 1/2 coverage checkering.

I've not used the 1911 grips but I currently have Ahrends on 4 Smiths and love them.
