Can W296 or Hodgdon Lil'Gun be used in a 10mm???
Anyone have any luck with either of these powders in the 10mm? I'm thinking they may be ok for the heaviest bullets.
Thanks for any input.

I haven't, but others such as Mike McNett have done so in the past. Results were mediocre, at best. Probably not enough case capacity would be my guess.

I figured they were probably a little too slow. I see one load for W296 in Lee that only gives about 950fps with very low pressure with a 180gr. bullet. I don't mind a mild load, as long as it's accurate . I haven't seen anything with Lil'Gun.
Thanks.

Even if you did find data I don't think it would cycle reliably.

I guess I'd better get some 800X, that seems like an ideal powder for the 10mm. I just thought I'd ask since I have a good bit of Lil'Gun and W296. Oh well, I'll just have to use it up in my Ruger Bisley 45 Colt .

As noted, not enough case cap. I like 800X, but it has to be hand weighed, it flows like mashpotatos in most measures & if you are running high end loads, you don't want 0.3gr swings in charge wt. AA#9 is useful for full loads w/ heavy bullets, but still a bit low on vel. I like AA#7 or Longshot. then again, I don't try to make the10mm into something it isn't. I'm happy w/ 180gr bullets @ 1200fps or 200gr @ 1150fps.

I counted 28 different powders in my data for the 10mm and saw nothing for 296 or Lil'Gun. Checking a burn rate chart, Lil'Gun comes in at #69 and 296 @ #72, fastest to slowest burning comparing 173 powders.
Power Pistol, Blue Dot, Unique and AA-7 seemed popular and they're faster burners.

I stuffed some cases full of W296 for one of my Glock 20s just to try it, and the ammo fired fine, the gun cycled OK, but accuracy was mediocre.

When the 10mm first came out, I tried 2400 & 4227, both far too slow for complete bruning & good accuracy, not to mention pretty low vel. BlueDot or a powder in that burn range will work pretty well from midrange to wild. Longshot works for me, good accuracy & vel. BlueDot is decent. HS7 was good, no longer made & AA#7 works well too. SOme guys like PP, just haven't tried it. I can use LS in my 357sig loads to, so I've pretty much stopped looking for a 10mm powder.

Longshot. It's my next try in 10mm. People swear by it. Power Pistol works real well for sane loads Longshot is like 800x that actually works in a powder measure.

I had alot of old W296 sitting around and I don't shoot enough full power 357mag to use it all up so I did some searching and found some load data for 357sig. It worked fine, cycled the G31. It was a compressed load and deformed the ranier HP's trying to seat them. I'm sure you'd get similar results trying it in a 10 mm. It'll work ok to use up powder but there are better choices out there for 10mm.
Here are some other's insight:
