Here's why.

Why a "black history" month?

Because "history" is always told through the eyes of the dominant culture, and the dominant culture for a long, LONG time has been "not black". The way I see it - it's TECHNOLOGY, not skin color. If blacks had invented gun powder, the nuclear weapon, been the first to fly an airplane, or invent the automobile, we'd instead be forced to have a "white history" month.

I have nothing against any race, the real question is "what do you have to offer society?". And it's not a racial question, it's a very individual question... what do YOU have to offer society?

I was born in the US but raised in the UK and moved back here when I was 21. I have served 23 years and now am retired from the US Air Force. I have seen and worked with all kinds of different people of all cultures.

My question is: Why do Americans have to hyphen their titles? ex. African-American, Asian-American?

Aren't we all AMERICANS!!!

PS. I am glad to read that I am not the only one who wonders why we have BHM.

A couple of weeks ago I was wondering why don't we celebrate John Wilkes Booth's birthday? He did more for blacks than MLK ever did, they just don't know it.

Please explain.

I lived in the Jim Crow south and it sucked.

Booth was before my time. I never saw any of his plays.

Likewise, why do we allow the existance of the NAACP??? Isn't that inherantly racist? How about we start an NAAWP? Can you imagine the uproar if someone seriously suggested it?

WOW! That's the first time I heard that idea. Maybe you should form that group. I bet a lot of people would join.

Sheeesh.

The NAACP's membership is not restricted due to race. "Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. From the ballot box to the classroom, the thousands of dedicated workers, organizers, leaders and members who make up the NAACP continue to fight for social justice for all Americans."

Black History Month is a good way to impress on underprivileged black youth the contributions of others of their race.

The Black Expo is a great example of this thinking.

Then afterwards they can hang out together in fellowship.

Wrong. The National Rifle Association was founded in 1871. The NAACP can be the second oldest.

I hired in USPS in 1985 and we were lectured first day there was zero tolerance on racism and anyone will be fired no questions asked. I then proceeded to spend a whole career there reading t shirts that said " ITS A BLACK THING, YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND " ....that place is a shlthole anyhow so it wasn't to surprising...lol

It's just a matter of time before we have Muslim History Month.

Lincoln was a disciple of Henry Clay and a "resettler". He wanted to deport former slaves after the war back to Africa, Haiti, central and South America. Basically anywhere but here. Had he lived, the black population in the US would be nil. Booth changed all that with a bullet to his head.

Me thinks that had he tried to deport them he would have heard the same song from farmers and small businesses that we hear today about illegals: "If they go, who will do the work?"

This is a touchy subject, so please keep it civil.
The very fact that u asked is proof positive why we should remain subjected to it... They were written out of history books in the 1930's. It ALL needs to be taught INCLUDING the histories of the Caucasian Tribes - your ancestors (and some of mine, too).
