Outdoor ranges near Birmingham

Just moved to Birmingham and was looking for a decent outdoor range within maybe 20 miles or so. Not really interested in joining a club like the Brock's Gap deal at the moment (if you're a member of one please share your experience). Just like to go out on my own time and shoot without fees when possible. I've spent a lot of time over the past few years at the South Sandy WMA range south of Tuscaloosa and the Marengo WMA/Public range south of Demopolis and like their setup. I spent a good amount of time in Birmingham before I moved and enjoy the indoor range downtown at API, but looking more for an outdoor place where I can set up some of my own targets and move around if I want and relax. Has anyone been to the Cahaba WMA range southwest of Helena? If so, how is it? Fairly clean, crowded, closely monitored, etc?

Or if someone's got some land outside of Bham, maybe we could just build a private range haha. I'll be glad to pitch in

A friend of mine uses the one near Helena and says it's ok. I think out to about 120 yds.

Depends on the time of year, as to whether it is crowded or not.

Easiest directions, going 65 south, exit 247 which is county rd 17 or valleydale and go right. Stay on this until it becomes dirt at the entrance to cahaba wma, go about another mile, turn right on another dirt road marked for public range, follow to the range. You will pass a shotgun/skeet range on the left, and make a left turn before a yellow gate, before reaching range.

It is roughly 20-25 minutes or so from interstate

Awhile back I made a trip to the range in Pleasant Grove, but got there too early on a Sunday and didn't realize they didn't open till noon. Anyone a member here? If so, talk about your experience. Seems like a nice place.

Tried Helena a couple times, but unless you're going super early on a weekday, it seems crowded. Especially only having 5 rifle lanes and a small shotgun area.
