Handgun for Girlfriend?
Hey guys,
My girlfriend recently told me that she would like to have a handgun. Her concerns were that it be easy to use and reload. With these details in mind, I'm thinking small frame double action revolver would be the way to go. Probably hammerless, 5 shot chambered in 38 special. She has shot my kimber .45 and glock20 10 mm, so recoil is not an issue. Does anbody have any advice on good affordable, reliable, handguns for women. Thanks

Of course there are going to be a million recommendations for the Smith & Wesson J frame - that goes without saying - but I also like the Ruger LCR. Nicer trigger, rated for +P ammo, and I couldn't care less what anyone says about the plastic in the frame. Not the entire frame is plastic - (or should I say Glock polymer ?).

J frame 442 or 642.
Glock 26 or 27, or 29 if she liked the 10mm
Ruger LCR OR LCP

Take her around to gun shops and have her handle some handguns. Find a place that rents guns for on site shooting and have her try them.
Let her make the choice and be supportive. I would suggest this for anyone not just girlfriends/wifes.

Unless she want to CCW this gun, I recommend full sized guns for the first gun.
G17, full sized 1911, S&W 686 with 4+ inch barrel....

Rent and try as many as she can. You never know what will strike her fancy.

Unless she is looking to conceal it I would steer her towards a 4" K Frame.
But why does everyone associate women with revolvers? A good 9mm would be equally as good. Since this is GlockTalk why not a G19?

My girl shoots an XD 9mm Subcompact.
Like many people have already stated, let her shoot many options before deciding. She had her heart set on a S&W M&P but ended up with the XD because it felt better in her hands.

+1, the important part is what she feels most comfortable with.
My fiancee likes the G19 better than she likes j frames for instance.

The last five females I taught to shoot I had them go from the Ruger 22/45 to the 2-3 inch S&W J Frame. All the the ladies quickly mastered the gun SA and DA. I only use full load 158 grain rounds but the ladies handle this fine to.
How the person feels about the gun has a lot to do with how it is presented.
I'm a big fan of the S&W (pre lock) steel J Frames but the new shooter has to be aware of the limitations of the gun.
As has been said the best thing is for the girl to shoot different guns and choose their own.
Whatever the gun, if the person likes it they have a better chance of doing well with it.

This. Best advice there could be on this subject. Trust me, I went down the wrong path and just brought something home for my wife a couple years back. Guess what, she hated it. She liked one of mine and carried it for awhile but wanted her own so I just got her a new carry piece, key being she picked it out. It took a couple weekends going to the range and hunting around for what she liked, but she now has what SHE wants and the results are good. Good luck!

Personally I don't like Glocks but I borrow a G17, G19 and G26 and let the shooters make up their own mind.
How's this for a cool G19 picture.
This lady ended up with a G19 and 38 J Frame.

Because some women do not have the upper body strength to reliably rack the slide of a semi-auto. There are techniques that women can use to make it easier for them (such as the two hand push) but you have to determine that the particular woman is capable.

You never know.
Fellow at work was shot by his wife with a 22.
Some time later he bought her a 9mm and she killed him with it.

There are times I would take that deal!
OP- Really a J frame S&W would be best. Its just simple, and goes bang when its needed.

My wife's current pistol. It also happens to be my Mom's CCW... yeah, I know. But hey, it's really a nice S&W. With the right ammunition, it's not nearly as painful to shoot as others I've tried. And I don't mind carrying it either
