To chop or not to chop barrel? Help!
I picked up a used Remington 870 express 20 gauge with a 28" barrel...way too long for home defense in a house built like mine. I planned on having a gunsmith chop it down to 18.5 inches but now I'm getting a sick feeling about it.
You see, I've never been a hunter, but I don't know if I want to waste the long barrel with remchoke system and two chokes. Kind of that "what if I do want to hunt later" thing, you know? There just aren't very many cheap cylinder bore plain jane barrels for 20 gauge shotties out there. I don't want to pay more for a barrel than I did for the gun ($130). What would you do?

Buy a barrel. One will come along. Check Brownells, Numrich, Cheaper than Dirt, Midway, Cabelas, Sportsmans World, etc etc. keep looking and check gunbroker as well.
it's doable. heck, if you just check gunboards it's doable, it'll just take a bit longer.

What I did was have a gunsmith cut the barrel to 18 3/4", then reinstall the choke tubes. Now I've got a shot shotgun that works for both hunting & home defense.
Of course, two barrels would also work.
