GATE Self-Defense Forum Expert Bio: Massad Ayoob

A published writer in the firearms field since 1971, Massad Ayoob has authored thousands of articles and several books, including “In the Gravest Extreme,” considered by many to be the authoritative text on judicious use of deadly force by private citizens in self-defense. Founder of Lethal Force Institute and director of LFI for many years, Mas now teaches around the country through MAG ( Mas has been an expert witness for the courts on firearms matters, homicide reconstruction, and training standards since 1979, served as chair of the firearms/deadly force training committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers from 1987 to 2006, and has been on the board of advisors for the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association since its inception.
Ayoob served two years as co-vice chair of the forensic evidence committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and sits on the advisory board for the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. He has been a certified police department prosecutor since 1988, and has been a police officer in fully sworn/part time status for almost 36 years. He contributes to each issue of Combat Handguns in the Self-Defense and the Law column, and each issue of Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement, and has served for over 30 years as law enforcement editor of American Handgunner and handgun editor for Guns Magazine. Mas emphasizes that the suggestions he will make in GATE constitute practical advice, not legal advice.
