sling length

I own both a ar-15 and a m1a, I'd like to order NM slings and I see that the length choices are often 50" or 54". I was wondering if their is any rules for what works best on each rifle or if it just mainly depends on the shooter. Sorry if this is a bad first thread for this new sub-forum.

Most people seem to prefer the 54" length. Try before you buy if possible.
