AK 7.62 x 54
I'm guessing that the reason AK's in the mosin caliber are not widely available is because the AK was designed to be able to shoot full auto and muzzle rise would be a problem. There are some in .308, so it should be feasible to chamber them in 7.62 x 54. They would probably sell well in the U.S. at least. A mag of 30 would be heavy, recoil probably stiff but mitigated somewhat by the gas action. I would probably buy one. Another reason would be that the 7.62 by 39 is plenty powerful for human targets and the AK was not designed as a hunting rifle. Guess I answered my own question as I am thinking about it.

the dragunov uses a totally different action than the AK
It is much closer to a sks than an AK
the romanian PSL is a 54r AK, the yugo m76 is also an AK action firearm in a big caliber, 8mm mauser.

The most cost effective way to have an AK on "steroids" would be to convert a Saiga .308. The downside is mags, however.

Bingo. Soviet gun designers have been cursed with this round all these decades. It's not much of a problem with belt fed machine guns but even Dragunov couldn't design the magazine for his rifle. However, hi-cap double-column, box magazines in 7.62X54R do exist so they are certainly not outside the realm of possibility.
