big game/long range any suggestions

I'm looking to replace a big game/ long range gun my dad gave me.
I want it to be reasonably cheap to shoot and reload.
I want like it to be capable of 1000 yards.
i was kicking around the idea of a .338 Win Mag.
Just want to be sure of a caliber before i spent hard earned money

Long-range and cheap do not really go together. You've got to pay somewhere.

Given a certain level of "target" ballistics, you then can scale up the terminal capability by increasing caliber (ie, bullet diameter), depending how big of an animal you want to shoot at what distance.

For elk at 1000 yards, I would consider 338LM to be the caliber of choice. That is an extreme distance for hunting.

For more reasonable situations, 7mm WM or RM are a great choice. They'll whack a deer or antelope with no problem to 800 yards.

Thanx

I don't mind spending money, I'm not going to spend 50 bmg money.
Cheap to me would be 308, which i am considering. One of the problems I'm haveing is being under gunned. I'm the kind of guy that i would rather have to much than not enough. It may sound crazy to all you out there but what if i feel like throwing lead at an elk 1000 yrd.
