I recently read part of, "My Father, His Firebombs, and My Messed Up Sixties Childhood". The son of a hippy mother and father, who, of course, didn't stay together, researched his father's activities back in those turbulent hippy-dippy days. It happened in an idyllic small town in central CA. Some hippies camped in Jackson State Forest near Fort Bragg and Mendocino, California. Police kicked them out, some plotted revenge. One (the father) put gasoline in some beer bottles with rags stuffed in the top, which the police found and charged him for. His dad was also wanted for smuggling dope from Mexico, and for being a fugitive from justice in Canada -more drug-related charges. He accepted his small kids in the summer of 1969, thinking they'd help provide him cover. But he got arrested one night with his kids watching. The dad did time in Soledad and Atascadero (he pleaded insanity thinking a nuthouse would be easier to escape from -it wasn't), and now lives alone on a farm without electricity, where he at least grows some of his own vegetables, back east. But he still smokes marijuana, and still has looney leftist ideas. The mother also lives on a farm back east, but with electricity and cleanliness, She remains a Hindu (she converted in the hippy days -possibly due to anti-European bias, I suspect), and has quite a few looney leftist ideas too, in my opinion. The writer-son has rebelled against his parents' hippitude, and worked to put himself through university, obtained and held a decent job as a journalist, got married in a church before having any children, remained with his wife and helped raise the children, and now says he has forgiven his father (he was never that mad at his mother).

It's a good story. I think this journalist is somewhat too far left in some of his thinking for my taste, but not too extreme. But anyway, as far as getting work in a small idyllic California town is concerned, one of the hippy friends of the hippy father in this story, now age 74, still works 20 hours a week in a grocery-store/food coop, stacking pots of yogurt for $9 an hour, 20 hours a week. And that's despite still smoking marijuana, which is said to hinder ambition and work-ethic, and having a police record.

Work is available if one will accept a "joe job" and can budget well enough to get by on little.

Yes, the Wisconsin public union concessions are a good example. They have to pay *some* into their own retirement now instead of getting it all paid for by the taxpayer. Also NJ has been taking things away from public employees. So far this is all confined to state gov workers. Just wait until the goodies are reduced for the public housing throngs in the big cities. Flash mob robs are going to go through the roof.

I suppose I can get a job doing nothing like what I do now in any field and just get by in a small town out of state... that would be nice. No headaches compared to what I have now and I can live a simpler life. That's all I ask.

HA! That's what I thought...if my field doesn't pan out with a job opening I'll just find work elsewhere. I tried for almost two YEARS! It's tough out there right now. However, if you'd like to flip burgers or work in a field with some "undocumented" folks, have at it.

That's not a personal jab at you lm. But I thought similar to you and got a big surprise. Not sure if your AO is any different.

I'm still not understanding why the identity of the "taking force" matters so much. Seems like people's rationale is "Well, I already pay taxes so what is a little more going to matter? Plus you can't fight city hall"...so taking from my bank account is fine vs. "No way I'd let a freeloading thief take things out of my home!"...taking from my home is a no no.

crack heads don't have helicopters and APC's.

you shoot 1-5 crack heads and you can probably sleep in your own bed that night. you shoot 1-5 military or LEO's and you ain't sleeping till you're dead or in jail.

that's the difference.

emt1581, what the hell are you talking about??? Their are "Non Lazy" folks who just can't find work, because past administrations outsourced our jobs to mexico and elsewhere....PERIOD! Welfare has never had any real oversight for years, it just didn't start since Obama.

It'd be helpful if you quoted what you were referring to before spouting off.

What happens when the hand-outs stop?

We might find out in a couple weeks if Congress can't reach a budget agreement. .

It'll be here soon with CA's latest budget game and with the CA state legislature within a gnat's hair from being a 2/3 DEM majority in both houses, it's only a matter of time before this whole state goes crashing down in flames.

Wait a minute wait a minute...do we finally have a winner with Obama's recent threatening of Social Security??

I'm pretty sure it was directed at seniors, but around here "welfare" is actually from the social security checks the ghetto dwellers get. So as a result it seems he has threatened to stop the handouts...no?

He does not mean handouts. People who paid into social security should get it, no question. He will never hit section 8, ebt, wic, our other programs to freeloaders who never contributed because that is his loyal base. Gotta get me sumadat Obama stash!
