Which ammo for IDPA

Im planning on going to my first IDPA match in a few weeks and was wondering what ammo to bring. I will be shooting my g19.
Ive never chronographed ammo from my gun so I just want to make sure I bring ammo that conforms to the rules. Which 9mm should I use?
Thanks.

Your first club level match your first priority is that it works 100% in your pistol. If you already have a round that you have a great reliability record with shoot that. Officially it needs to make a powerfactor of 125. Winchester White Box makes it so I have been told. If that is the case you would have to load your own to get under that PF. I only shoot my reloads at matches or my carry ammo so I can't help on specific commercial ammo.

I have never seen a crono at a club level match. If this is your first match you will have enough things going on to worry about crono's and PFs. Just bring your favorite target round and have fun. A MD tossing out a brand new shooter using commercial ammo would be a VERY strict one.

When you get ready for the State IDPA match or Nationals by then you will be loading your own and have the crono and such.

Just about any factory 9mm should make minimum power factor, even wolf.
Most if not all local matches don't crony the rounds at the local level. Pretty much State and National only...

Thanks for the info.
Ill probably use some winchester NATO spec since its pretty close to the 124 +p gold dots I use for carry. I didn't know how strict they would be about the power factor.
It should be fun.

Winchester WB, S&B, PMC, Blazer, UMC, Wolf, etc. Whatever is a good deal at the time.

No problems with any of them. Never saw anyone chrono ammo at a local match.

And have had chronos several times at state/regional matches and never had a problem with PF.

BTW I've shot a Glock 34, Glock 19, Glock 26, 4th Gen Glock 17, S&W M&P and Springfield XD Tactical all with the above ammo in matches.

Have fun. NATO should be 115 Gr @ 1280 FPS for a 147 PF. More then enough.

Unless you're just curious about NATO specs... that has nothing to do with IDPA. You can use 115, 124, 147gr etc.... whatever you have should be fine.

Im pretty sure every single factory 9mm round will hit minor PF, so just go with what you can find cheapest. And after a few matches and you really like it, then start looking into some reloading equip so you can make some spectacular mousefart loads!

Don't worry about power factor at your first local match, no one chrono's locally. Just don't point your gun at the RO. As already stated, run what you brung, and be safe. No one will remember your score, but they will remember your style, ie, that you were safe and made all A hits...

Ya, that new guy, he was totally safe, and made his hits, that's what you want.

Don't spend to much time looking for the A zone on an IDPA target.

Go for the O-Zone.

If the crew can comment about how hard the new shooter worked resetting stages and pitching in putting everything away after the match they will love you.

Since I do not reload I buy the least expensive I can find. Right now it is the Federal champion at Walmart. 50 rounds @ $9.97.

I have yet to see any factory 9mm NOT make power factor.

Another reason you don't see Crono at club level matches is they have to provide the gun for the most part. Your rounds to be tested has to be in the longest barrel gun allowed in the division. For 9mm that is generally a G34 even if you are shooting a G26 in the competition. The velocity of the round out of G26 does not matter.

Most matches use your gun for the testing. I have known a few people that actually bring two guns for matches. One gun that they use in the competition, and the other one for the chrono stage, because their gun usually has a shorter barrel.

Actually, in IDPA, they must use the longest barreled gun in the division that fits the box for chrono. So if you are running a G26, the chrono is from a G34 in SSP....

Page 28 of the IDPA manual:

Quote:
Chronograph three (3) rounds at a distance of ten (10) feet using a
gun of MAXIMUM barrel length for the DIVISION of the same
gun type. If two (2) of the three (3) rounds exceed the power floor,
the competitor is in compliance. Prior to each shot, the muzzle of
the gun should be elevated to move the powder charge to the rear
of the case, thus giving the competitor every chance to achieve
maximum velocity.

As others have already mentioned -the power factor will not be an issue at the local club matches.

Also, as others have already mentioned, I have never had ANY factory 9mm ammo that wasn't well above the required power factor. I've chrono Winchester White Box (115gr) many times and its usually moving around 1130 out of my G19 and above 1170 out of my G34 (which is almost 100 fps more than needed to make pf).

The more important issue you may want to check is whether your sight setup is giving you a Point-Of-Aim that equals the Point-Of-Impact of those rounds. It test this off sandbags at either 15 yards or 25 yards. If its putting the group about 2" high at 25 yards it works well for IDPA distances. But I've had a few Glocks that put some ammo much higher with stock sights -not the end of the world, but good to know and confirm before a match. Folks who have never tested this often get very frustrated on stage 3 of the classifier
