Went on Safari... .380 wouldn't stop beast...
... so I brought him home as a pet.
Had to buy a huge shovel... he won't stop pooping.

Actually, the reason he got the elephant was because his baloon flew away. the elephant was the only thing that stopped him from crying.

Well, at least you thought of the children, and didn't take a 10mm. I prefer not to see a nuclear holocaust in my lifetime...
Was that photo taken recently?... I went to a Ringling Bro's circus YEARS ago... Even as young as I am, its probably been close to 20yrs..

Extreme shock would have dropped him in his tracks out of a 380

Actually the pictures weren't taken at the circus. My old airbrush partner and I were at the Circus Hall of Fame in Peru, Indiana doing some painting for a few weeks when our buddy, who is the trainer for the elephant, pulled in for a few days.
The pictures are about 13-15 years old. At the time, 'King Tusk', as Ringling Brothers billed him, (his real name is Tommy and actually responds to it) was the biggest land mammal in captivity. He's a whole lot bigger than he appears in the pictures.
You can plainly see the fresh cuts on the end of his tusks... two days before the pictures were taken we 'trimmed' them with a saws-all, file and sandpaper. They were so long they dug into the ground every time he walked.
Was a bit leery about sitting on his tusks but when Jimmy, (the trainer) told me that Jay Leno had done it on the Tonight show I had no choice... it was a matter of honor.
Got to baby sit two bear cubs while I was there, work with the smaller elephants, feed the lions and tigers and fall from the high wire into the net. (I got almost 4 feet before I fell. :crying
It was a pretty cool time.

I think the little piece of rope they keep him penned up with is a nice touch. Like it's going to stop a multi-ton Republican should nancy pelosi wander by.

Neat little town. Great museum there, has the skull of an elephant that went on a rampage during winter quartering. Killed several people as I recall... skull has three large bullet holes.
IIRC Peru is also the place John Dillenger escaped from jail. Enjoyed my stay there... not in the jail... the town.

If they want to go somewhere, they go. Not much you can do about it. The 'rope' is actually a one strand electric fence that isn't even turned on. When it's on and they touch it with the tip of their trunk a few times they learn their lesson and stay away from it.
Ever see the chain they put around one leg when they're staked out? Looks like they could snap it with no problem, huh? They can. When they're young and untrained they put a thick, heavy chain on their leg, one they can't break. Over time they realize they can't break it and stop trying. When they get older and bigger they use a small light chain... the elephants figure they can't break that one either so they don't even try. Something about having a 'memory like an elephant'.
It's really cool working with them but ya gotta be careful... they'll flip you 30 feet with a swipe from their trunk, then flatten you into the ground with their forehead.

Thats so he can tell Left from Right. Just like the kid next to you in school that had a string on his right hand all the time.

Rusty:
The lower bands are to keep the ends of the tusks from chipping and splintering... the top one on the left is to keep a split that was already there from getting worse. Filled it with some sort of epoxy then slid up the band.
From a distance tusks look very smooth... up close they are very rough with small cracks and gouges. Unbelievably strong though. I have a picture around here somewhere of me sitting on his tusks and him lifting up and balancing on his hind legs. Lifted me like I was a bag of feathers.
I declined to climb up on his neck while he stood up. My buddy Dave did though... he's not as smart as me.
