What do you think about Nyclad in a model 60 ?


Do any of you use it or have any experience with it ?



Does it have a track record ?

I love the Federal Nyclad ammo for use in snubs..
I have a stash of it in 38spl & 9mm that I use in my 642/942 & 940..
It has low recoil , Minimal flash & expands great & is also very accurate..
The ammo I have is "New Old Stock"

I came across a few boxes a while back and the price was right. Tried it out and found that it shot fine in my S&W M-36 3"

I've heard that Federal is making the "Nyclad" ammo again but haven't come across any yet..
All that I have was scored from a good friend at the S&W forum who has a stash & was kind enough to send me several boxes when I did a trade with him for some J Frame grips that I got from him & then sent them back to him to keep his 342Ti complete..
I have standard 38spl & +P 38spl plus some standard 9mm..
My 642 Airweight isn't +P rated but being it has 100% forged parts & an Anodized frame plus a 9mm cylinder fit to it it's not going anywere..
Also I use the Nyclads in my G19 as well & there quite accurate..

The standard pressure .38 Nyclad was my go-to load for my Airweight 642 that I bought as my first on-duty BUG in the mid-90's. I eventually drifted away, first to +P loads, and then to other latest/greatest BUG's.

I recently decided to go back to my ole faithful, and lo and behold found that Nyclads had been reintroduced. After testing them alongside the Speer Gold Dot 135+P short barrel, and 158 +P LSWCHP loads from Remington and Winchester, I have decided the Nyclads are the best option for me in my old 642 as well as my much newer 37-2.

I use the Non +P Version in any snubbie that is not +P rated. I don't think you'll beat it for a standard pressure load. I have a combination of NOS & the newly reintroduced stuff.

Also used the 125gr +P version in my +P guns until my supply ran low enough to go to the Speer GD 135gr+P. I understand that the +P version is NOT being reintroduced.

Great ammo, I use it in my 1984 vintage Colt Agent snubbie.

I found a couple of boxes several months ago and gave it a try. It's new 125 gr HP. It's pretty mild in recoil in 442/642. My regular load is the Speer 135 gr Gold Dot HP +P.

I don't know the specifics but the Nyclad .38 Special has a pretty good reputation for putting down bad guys. Apparently has to do with the soft lead and big-assed hole in the front. It shoots well in my snubbies so I've put in a few more boxes.

This may have been a different loading of the Nyclad given the date of testing being 1990. Also note a 3" barrel handgun was used. Even so, penetration and expansion results are pretty impressive.

No one's ever been able to establish a correlation between how bullets do when fired into water and how they do when fired into soft tissue. One consistent thing about bullets fired into water is that they generally expand more consistently than they do when fired into soft tissue.

In other words firing into water yields no useful information.

If a person wants to know how bullets do in soft tissue, and doesn't have any actual living soft tissue to shoot into, then properly prepared calibrated 10% ballistic gelatin seems to correlate to human soft tissue better than any other medium in terms of expansion and penetration.

however, Federal Nyclad has always had a good record of expanding (no real jacket to peel back) but gave way to the more popular and up and coming +P loads...it is still (and it is being made again) a good round and I use it in my Colt Cobra AND my 642 Centennial...

NYCLAD FBI loads (158g +P LSWCHP) are my standard carry in .38 spl. I've always been very happy with recoil, muzzle flash, point of aim/point of impact with them.

-And the terminal ballistics for this load are well established.

Back "in the day" (circa mid-late 80's), the S&W produced (before being purchased by Federal) Nyclad was consistently given the BEST non +P rating by many of the gun rag writers.

Keep in mind, the variety of +P offerings were usually limited Winchester and Remington in the 110/125 grain JHP's and 158 grain LSWC's.
