most lethal 22LR round ?

assume 25 yard shot on large varmints. Your go-to round would be ....

I'm goin to have to say CCI's Velocitor, 40 grain hollow point at 1450 feet per second sounds like the best to me.

Altho I'd like to try the CCI Segmented round and see how it does too. 32 grains that split into 3 pieces, on impact, at 1600 fps sounds like it would be pretty devistating to a squirrel.

Winchester used to make a round called Power Point.
The squirrels and possums around my area dreaded it.

I think I have a couple of boxes left somewhere in the old safe.

I like velocitors too though

If it's a "large varmint", I want the penetration.

Velocitors would be my choice, if they shot accurately in my gun.

Although the question being asked is kind of like which ice pick is the best. Because with the .22LR your shot placement matters much much more then what bullet you are using.

Try the stingers out. Bullet choice has more to do with what game you're trying to kill. I wouldn't advise using quikshoks on squirrels because it can destroy a lot of meat, but that round wouldnt penetrate very deep on a coyote either. For yote you'd want a stinger.

CCI SGB's. Because it is a solid and most important, it is the most accurate round my gun shoots. period. There is no subsitute for accuracy ever.

I've never shot a yote, (and if I went out to shoot one I would have a larger caliber then a .22LR) but I have tested stingers and velocitors in gel.

Velocitors penetrated much better. And I've never gotten real good accuracy from Stingers.

I agree with the Supermaximum, they sure produce a heck of a flash out of my Ruger Hunter long barrel.

I shoot and also stock All KINDS of .22LR , depending on what's on sale, available, what I'm shooting , etc. But for me CCI Is consistently high high quality aka " teh hotnezz" no matter the paricular type of round or CCI " flavor"

I've taken dozens of coyotes with Stingers. I get good accuracy with them out of my Browning BL22. Never seen the need for something larger than a .22 for yotes.

Like one of the above posters said before, I don't switch out ammo either.

I'd use what is most accurate in my gun.

For me in my 10/22, that's the CCI Sub Sonics. I can get 1.25in groups regularly at 100y, even got a few 1in groups and posted one of here a while back.

Most 22LR ammo puts out between 90 and 140FPE. In reality, that 50FPE spread means nothing to an animal over 20LBS. Solid tip bullets will get much better penetration. I've known a few ex-poachers over the years and they used match or subsonic ammo to dispatch game.

I knew a hog butcher in S.Cal/Victorville area who used a Ruger Mark1 with CCI standard ammo to dispatch big pigs. One shot, one kill at under 5yrds. (He swore he could drop them from much farther, but never showed me)

I've hunted groundhogs for many years and my favorite ammo is CCI Stingers. They hit pretty hard and accurate too.

Several questions.. is 'large varmint' to include 2 legged?

Do you intend a rifle or pistol, & iron sights or optics?

Hunting, or henhouse?

Specific varmints you can pick the round for, or generic varmints you'ld want general utility rounds? The ultra high speed tend to splash, make surface wounds, more than solids, as well as not famous for accuracy. I figure for 2 legged varmints, 5 round minimum.. you ain't gonna get a bounty on the hide. . and I'd want solids in most hunting situations I can think of, or a different gun than a .22. My best .22 is my big boys .22, a .357 '94 Marlin. It picks up with .38 wadcutters where high powered .22's leave off @ 150 ft lbs, and goes all the way to 1000 ft lbs + with 125 gr .357.
