Doing my best to make it to my first event june 12 at Chabot. $30 for class in the morning and a shoot in the afternoon.....the same for 2 weeks later and then get some sort of ipsc card...i think... hopefully my kytac holster and mag pouches will come in on time, supposed to be monday...

Chabot has a bit of an odd history with Action Pistol. You might consider going to the Richmond New Competitor class on June 19 instead.

Really? Please clarify. I am new to firearms, so I am ignorant to many things, ie, what to look for in a range. I did take a trap class up there with my son 6months ago. It was good, but informal and unstructured. Seemed kinda personalized.

I did read on the new competitor class at Richmond. It did seem much more organized. Chabot is 20mins away for me and a great motorcycle ride. I dont want to have to be packing extra heat when I roll thru the killing zones of Richmond.

Facts and personal opinion on Chabot would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There is a long drawn-out series of stories on how IDPA was kicked out, and later their own "tactical handgun" competitions were canceled because enough people complained about a lack of safety (rather than address the issue, the rangemaster simply canceled the program as punishment for the complaints).

Unfortunately, the range is run as a personal kingdom (despite it being on public land). It's a great range for a casual visit, but I would not encourage anyone to get involved in the club's formal programs. Actually, that's not correct. I think it's OK to get involved, as long as you understand that you do not complain about the way things are run. If you do voice issues, you shouldn't be shocked to find yourself banned from the range. (No, I'm not banned, but I got a very bad taste after an effort trying to re-start their IDPA program several years back.)

The other reason I recommend Richmond over Chabot is that Richmond will actually focus on actual USPSA rules and procedures (and IDPA to a lesser extent). It will provide information that better prepares you for shooting not only at Richmond, but at any other club that hosts USPSA or IDPA matches.

As for driving there safely, it is a non-issue. The route there doesn't go through any of the nasty Richmond neighborhoods.

I live in Castro Valley, and wish I could provide a better opinion of Chabot. The range is 10 minutes from my house, and really is a gorgeous location. But I'm much happier overall driving the 35 minutes up to Richmond because it's a much more fairly run organization.

Hey Gryff, thanks for the input. A quick google search reveals that youve been an active shooter and youve been promoting the shooting sports with positive influences in our area for many years. Great job! I take your comments seriously and sincerely.

Youve got me re-thinking chabot. Youve mentioned long drawn out stories on idpa getting kicked out. Do you have any links? Unfortunately, Richmonds New Shooter class doesnt fit my june sched, chabot does. Safety is the utmost important factor in my decision now, after all I dont want some jackass next to me not following rules. Los Altos has it really dialed in with their RO's monitoring with a friendly demeanor. Ive only been there twice, but other ranges should follow their standards.

If chabots new shooter class is as relaxed as the trap class I took there, then that could pose some issues for me. Dont get me wrong, the trap class was good, friendly, safe, and personal, but it was informal and not structured. Trap and ipcs training are 2 completely different animals. I see a need for a more formal structured training when it comes to running around and shooting things with handguns. I got some more homework to do. I prolly should just wait till July for Richmond. But damn I got the itch. My kytac rig prolly wont even come in on time (according to many reviewers).

Thanks for the kind comments. I try to be a positive influence for competitive shooting (but occasionally the more obnoxious sides of my personality can show through).

If the dates don't work for attending Richmond's class, then I say go to the Chabot one. I doubt that they will teach any bad principles. And if you feel that it wasn't encompassing enough, you can do Richmond's later on.

BTW, Richmond's next IDPA match (which I think is the best sport for starting in practical pistol competitions) is July 11th. Come out and shoot!
