G20L Range Reports - Rounds 1 & 2

ROUND 1

I got a chance to take out my G20L slide, with my G20SF & G21SF frames. I took 200rds of mixed ammo, and a couple targets to the range for a function test. My first observation was that the Dawson Precision sights are insane. For the first shot, I put the POA directly on the "X" of a B-27 target 7yds, fired, and the "X" was gone. These sights allowed me to shoot with so much more precision than any other sights I have used. When I look at the sight picture, there is a lot of daylight on either side of the much narrower front sight post, which makes it possible to see more of the target. I shot 200rds at 7yds-10yds-15yds-25yds, and only bought 2 targets, so I didn’t take any pics. This was *the first chance I had gotten to put any rounds through the barrel or slide. I used the G20SF frame for 150rds, and the G21SF frame for 50rds, both with the factory 17lb recoil assembly.

50rds - UMC 180gr FP FMJ
Out of the first 10rds, I had 4 FTF/FTRB. After that, the next 40rds functioned properly. Recoil was as you would expect from a light 10mm load.

40rds - Triple R Munitions 180gr JHP (proprietary load)
All 40rds functioned properly, and compared to everything else I shot, felt like shooting 22lr. The recoil made it very easy to shoot, and very easy to shoot accurately.

40rds - 9.1gr Hodgdon Longshot, 180gr JHP
All 40rds functioned properly, and the recoil started to warm up a little.

40rds. - 9.3gr Hodgdon Longshot, 180gr JHP
FTF/FTRB every 2 or 3 rounds, and 2 FTE. Pretty good recoil, very accurate. It seemed like sometimes the slide was being pushed back so fast, that it was just blowing past the case and not ejecting it. Then when the slide tried to return to battery, it got stuck behind the lip of the case. The brass really started to fly with this load.

20rds - DT 200gr WFNGC
FTF/FTRB every 2 or 3 rounds. When it did function properly, these were very accurate as well. These functioned very similarly to the 9.3gr load.

10rds – Hornady 180gr XTP, (factory rounds)
2 FTRB, but very accurate.

Because of the way it functioned with the mild loads, I think a stronger recoil spring will fix the issues with the hotter loads. I’ll pick up a Wolff stainless guide rod with 19, 20, & 22lb springs to see if that does the trick. Overall, I am very happy with my G20L so far. I figured I’d have a few little bugs to work out, so it’s par for the course.

ROUND 2

I took my Glock 20 Longslide out for another short range session the other day. My fist range trip was plagued with FTF issues while shooting full power loads. I bought a Wolff stainless guiderod, and a Wolff extra power recoil calibration kit. The XP spring kit came with 22/20/19/17lb springs, and at Wolff's recommendation, I started with the 22lb spring. Between the longer sight radius, the Dawson Precision sights, and the 10mm cartridge, this thing is rediculous. It wasn't cheap to put it together, but it was worth every penny. I experienced ZERO FTF's with the 22lb spring, so next time I'll throw in the 20lb spring and see how it runs.

40rds Triple R Munitions 180gr JHP
This is a very mild, high precision load. Using the 22lb spring, all rounds functioned flawlessly. I was a little surprised, because I wasn't sure if these mild rounds would cycle with the much stronger spring.

30rds Double Tap 200gr WFNGC
Using the 22lb spring, NOT ONE FTF!!! When I used the factory 17lb spring on the first range trip, 1 out of every 2-3 rounds would FTF. I was hoping that the stronger spring would be the fix, and so far it was.

50rds UMC 180gr FMJ
The first 20rds I shot just to check for function. Using the 22lb spring, they functioned flawlessly. I sent a B-27 target out to 15 yards for the next 30 rds. I fired as fast as they range allows, which is once every 2 seconds. I am pretty happy with the results, and I know if I focus I can get them a lot tighter. The target below is 30rds of UMC @ 15yds offhand.

I pretty much agree with everything you've said about the Dawson precision sights (I have a set on my AA unit - and they are even better than my Novak's on my 29SF)...and in regards of what you have said about the recoil springs - full (or what I like to call original) power loads for 10mm will require them (Glock should know better than to use that wimpy stock spring).

Nice report!

Great review! Are you using the solid top slide?

No it has the cut-out. I might have the barrel ported somewhere down the road, so I'm glad I got this one.

Couldn't agree more on the Dawson sights....got them on my 34 & 35 that I use in USPSA, best mod I ever made to the pistols. One of the G 20's will get them next, the other already carries Mepro night sights.
Glad it's running well for you !
