I looked at IDPA
I went and watched a local match, the only thing I didn't like and because of this I won't be shooting IDPA. You drop your empty mags on a concrete floor during each phase. Those mags cost me $25-$30 eachand I will not see them ruined.

then you sure aren't going to like dropping 150$ mags in USPSA. try Steel Challenge, Action Pistol, or GSSF.

You only drop your mags on a "slide lock reload" and even then I dont think you have to..its just faster. Or get a glock and dont worry about it

Just get yourself 2/3 sacrificial mags just for IDPA and go for it.

Glock mags are externally made of polymer and will take a great deal of abuse.
Reload with retention each time, regardless of any penalty, and shoot the match.
Only use the 17 round magazines and do not reload at all and accept the failure to do right penalty.
Don't use any magazine during the stage and just fire the one round in the chamber.
Get a second job, second mortgage or work more overtime so you can afford more mags.
Donate a rubber mat or carpet for the IDPA club to use.
See... you have lots of options.

Buy KCI mags. $5 each and mine have been 100% reliable over the course of over 1,000 rounds.

I have dropped my glock mags hundreds and hundreds of times on concrete and have not had a problem. Half the time they still have lots of rounds in them during demos for students.

I shot my local IDPA match this past weekend and I only dropped one mag on the ground. Yep - Slide lock reload! Come on if the only reason you say you don't want to do IDPA is because your mag will hit the floor, come on, your equipment can handle a little bump from time to time.
It is a great match to shoot, you will not regret it, even if it does bang up a mag from time to time. If you really are worried about it pick one mag to be the one that you drop on the ground and count the rounds for your stage, if it will cause you to do a slide lock reload, put in that mag, it will be worth it.

I'm assuming this was an indoor match ?
I would actually be thankful to drop my mags on concrete rather than have all the dirt/mud/grass & crap that typically gets in em at most club shoots. But I do shoot Glock and never worry about the cost of a mag.
However even with Glock mags I tend to use a set for the gun games and others for carry -the games will get em beat up over time for sure. Even back when I shot 1911's I had some practice beater mags that would take the ground crunching dive a dozen times a match.
And as was pointed out above, you don't HAVE to drop a mag at all -you'll probably learn to do the fastest RWR in your club. But if the cost of a mag is gonna be a deal killer -you probably could not afford the ammo to shoot these matches anyway.
Frankly, your post reads like you went looking for an excuse to not shoot IDPA -and viola ! you found one Your loss.

Our IDPA range uses pea gravel, so there's no grass, and almost no dirt. But concrete wouldn't be a big deal, Glock mags can take a beating. At the $25 each I pay from GlockParts for my G17... buy 4 and they'll last quite awhile.

Then don't drop them. Put them in a pocket before you go for your next magazine.

Stop treating your gun as something that might break if you don't baby it around. It is not made out of glass, as a matter of fact here is a quick tip - if during self defense situation you happen to run out of bullets, which by the way is not that far fetched, you can use your empty gun as a impact weapon. That's what they call pistol whipping!
Seriously, man up or sell your gun and pick up stamp collecting, there is no moving parts, and worst that can happen is a paper cut, which may or may not lead to you dropping your magnifying glass...
... never mind I just remembered a magnifying glass might actually cost more than a 30 dollars GLOCK magazine...

I have dropped Glock mags on concrete, dirt, in the mud, etc, etc. No issues, and they still work 100%.

Glock mags will take a beating and work. That said I use separate mags for training, just in case. But a set of 3 or 4 especially for training or IDPA will last a long time. And with the GTUL they are pretty easy to disassemble and clean, if you drop them in mud, etc.

What kind of gun are you shooting that has mags that won't sustain hundreds of drops on concrete?
Sounds like a pretty lame excuse to not shoot...what is the real reason you don't want to try it?

I have been using the same 6 10rd G17 mags for about 6 years. I have shot hundreds of matches and done thousands of reloads. You won't hurt a Glock magazine by dropping it on concrete. Quit worrying and thinking up excuses, just go shoot and have fun.

OP - I'm curious... why do you own a gun???
Seriously? - If you own it to enjoy it, IDPA is a lot of fun - and if you own it for self defense, a mag drop change is the quickest way to reload and keep your ass alive.

First, IBTL
Second, don't stay away from shooting IDPA at that one particular range because of worry for damage to your mags. Tactical Reload or Reload w/ Retention each time; even with 2 reloads on a stage you wouldn't add that much time. In the end, the benefits of shooting IDPA and then spending range time practicing IDPA skills far out weight any magazine damage you may be concerned about.

I've got 4 mags. I only carry 1 typically and possibly 1 as a backup, but if you have a Glock tool (or compatible punch), you can replace mag bases, springs etc, with no problem at all. In fact, I recommend the tool and small amount of know how because either way a clean mag is a happy mag.
The experience you'll get from an occasional match is worth more than the cost of a mag IMO.
