180gr Hornady Bulk Bullet Load?

I've recently started reloading, and have done a few hundred rounds so far. However, all the rounds I've made have been directly as instructed by the Speer reloading manual (155gr GDHP CCI Primers etc).

I have 1,000 Hornady 180gr FMJ FP bulk bullets that I want to make some loads with.

I was wondering if i should use the same data that Speer lists in their manual for their TMJ bullets. I know not all bullets are the same even if they weigh the same. I'm hoping that y'all can help me workout some loads for these.

Current powders are 800x and Bluedot.

Thanks for all the help!

Also the gun is a G29 with a stock length KKM barrel and Wolff 23lb springs

For safety, you could reduce the load by .5 gr with the substitution of the different bullet, and work your way back up, looking for pressure signs.

Just to verify, would that be .5 gr off the minimum load? Thanks for the help.

800X starting load 6.7, max load 10.1. 1.260" OAL Hornady Case, WLP primers

Blue dot starting load 7.5, max load 10.7. 1.260" OAL Hornady Case, WLP primers

From hornady reloading manual #7

In my experience, the Speer bullets obturate with pressures a bit lower than Hornady XTPs. The XTP is, obviously, not the same projectile as the FMJ. That being said, projectiles can have vastly different pressure and velocity characteristics.

Watch the 800X loads. I experienced significant indications of excess pressure with 180 gr XTP, 800X, and WLP (Starline case). This was at charges far below max (starting at about 8.1 gr and significantly at about 8.6 gr).

I have had good experiences with Blue Dot and 180 gr Hornady's. Again, my experience is with the XTP, but Hornady's data is for both.

Your results may vary with the FMJ. Go with the starting loads as listed by ctkelly and you should do fine.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the information.

I went out and bought the Hornady manual that ctkelly pulled the data from. The exact bullet I have is listed (who would have though in a hornady manual). Again thanks to everyone, I really appreciate it.

Taterhead, what barrel were you using when experiencing these pressure symptoms with 800x. I loaded up a series of rounds all the way to 10.1 grain with CCI 300 primers, and didnt notice any real pressure symptoms. I'm using a KKM barrel. Case head expansion at max was around .424 with new DT brass.

I run with a stock G20 (Gen 3) barrel. Case expansion was well beyond max and primers were absolutely flattened. It is puzzling. Same story with 200 grainers too. Pressure indications at velocities well below those of BD or A9. 300s give a bit better results than do WLPs or 350s.

800X has generally been a poor performer for me with heavier bullets. It runs awesome with the 135 Noslers though.
