What is the optimal method and ritual to sharpen knives?

What is the optimal method and preparation to sharpen knives? What type of cleaning solution, finishing touches, and drying methods do you recommend? What about the actual physical method of sharpening a knife? Do you have a suggested method? Does it differ if you are sharpening a blade coated with something? What are your recommended methods of refinishing or "Repainting" a knife?

Thank you.

Dear CDR Glock,

Your questions would take me a dozen pages to answer. I recommend a book called The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening by John Juranitch.

It is all in there.

Best Regards,
