Best powder for 308win?

I have a savage model 10 with a 24in barrel chambered in 308 win that i have been reloading for for some time now and id like to expand my powder range a bit. I already use varget and it is a good powder but id like to get something that has more velocity and uses less powder and doesnt have as much of a temperature variation. What do you suggest?

I don't know if IMR 3031 is what your looking for. But i have had great results with it. Sub MOA at a 100 and 1 MOA at 300 using 168 sirrea HPBT. IMR 4895 and Hodgdon 4895 are also good.

Reloading

As Reloaders we should adapt the load to the gun, not the gun to the load.

Try Varget. If that does not work, consider Varget. As a last resort, Varget might do in a pinch.

A large majority of Palma shooters cant be wrong. (that is an iron sighted 308 at 800, 900 and 1,000 yards. Prone with a sling.)

If Varget is giving you temp issues, have your bedding (or the rest of your rifle) checked cause its a slim chance its Varget.

This. Varget is a great powder for MANY rifle cartridges. In my short experience of reloading I have found the Varget works especially well in .223 Rem and .308 Win. I have even had some luck with Varget in .30-06. Although I have not tinkered with the .30-06 as much as the other two.

I even use Varget in my 375 H&H.

Sometime a few sprinkles on my breakfast cereal.

I have had extremely good results with WW-748 and 150-168 gr. bullets in .308 Winchester loads. My normal routine is to fire 10 groups of 5 rounds each. Average results have ranged from .47 to .78 MOA. Rifle used was a .308 Rem. 700 VS-SF. Firing at 400 yds. these bullets continued to produce less than MOA groups using the WW-748.

All rifles are diff. My M700VS did ok w/ Varget, but groups opened up as vel went higher. If you don't mind spending a bit more, VV140 or VV150 work great. You can get a bit more vel out of the VV150. FOr pure accuracy, tough to beat one of the 4895 powders, but not the highest vel.

R15 is not the current powder. It has been changed numerous times.

Around here, there are guys using Varget who say they're gonna try some ReLoader 15 to see how it works. And, there's guys who use ReLoader 15 who say they're gonna try some Varget to see how it works.

IMR-4064 was a top choice for match shooters for a long tome but Varget seems to be taking that roll now.

I'm using 3031 as well. It doesn't measure very well and by very well I mean at all but man is it accurate out of my 700. 26in fluted bbl, glass bedded, 1-12 twist running 155grn AMAX puts rounds through the same hole at 100 and touching at 200.

Just my $0.02. Velocity does not always mean accuracy. I have shoot good groups with .308 going about 2250 FPS.

+1 on 3031...

Since it works well in so many of my rifle calibers, I buy it in the 8 pound jugs.
