Soot in casings after re-sizing
Have you guys seen this? I am using Dillon die, reloading 38 Special. Can't say that I have noticed before until I started making 38's. The die set is brand new. Brass were tumbled cleaned for >2 hrs. The amount of soot is small, and more annoying than anything else. Rounds shoot fine. Is there any reason to be concerned?

Nothing to be worried about, it's normal. What are you loading with, Bullseye?

Winchester 231, which is becoming harder to find. I remember reading somewhere that Hodgon's HP-38 is identical to Win231. Saw some at the gunshop today. Maybe 3 or 4 cans. I might have to pick them up if I can confirm this fact.

It's funny how some burn rate charts list HP38 as slower then 231 when all the internet sites say it's the same thing.

I've noticed the same thing but I've read several manufacture articles saying they're the exact powder and the loadings for the two powders always seem to be identical.
Kinda like H110 and 296 I guess... either that or it's a vast left wing conspiracy.

Strange isn't it. Some load books show different weights and velocities for the same round. The book "Propellant Profiles" (a compilation of the column from Handloader magazine) notes other differrences.
I've heard they are the same powder; but I have doubts. Since I don't use HP38 (but I do use 231) I'll just stick to the 231 loadings.

Email Hodgdon, when they respond back that they are the same, will you believe them? They are the same powder, actually they are the same ****ing powder. Any differences in data is due to lot to lot variations.

Just to stir the pot a tad they do have different volume measuring density. W231 VMD is .0931 and Hp38 is .0926. So, not exactly the same?
OP, yes there's soot in my cases after resize/deprime.

Thanks for the response about the soot guys... I was a little worried about it. About the powder, I didn't mean to spark a debate. I am sure both powders are fine and similar. I definitely will stick to Win231 if it's available. I love this powder for 9mm, 45ACP, and now 38 Special. If I am forced to switch to another powder, I will work up to a good load.
